Lewis Baseball Splits With Maryville Sunday

ST. LOUIS, MO. - The Lewis University baseball team split with Maryville Sunday at Weber Field, falling 7-5 in the first game and using five runs over the final two innings to come back to win 9-7 in the final game of the series.

SUMMARY

Game 1: Maryville 7, Lewis 5
Cain Headrick (Custer Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) opened up the scoring in the top of the second with a RBI single to score Jason Krol (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence), giving the Flyers an early 1-0 lead. Michael Alt (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) added to the lead in the third with a single that score Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin).

The Flyers moved ahead 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Alt singled again, this time scoring Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East). Maryville got the run back in the bottom half of the inning on a home run to make it 3-1.

The Saints evened the score in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run double. Lewis came back to take the lead in the top of the eighth as Cherokee LeBeau (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) reached on a fielder's choice, leading to Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) crossing the plate. A Krol single scored Ian Nguyen (Anoka, Minn./Coons Rapids), giving the Flyers a 5-3 advantage.

Maryville responded again though as a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth tied the game and a walk-off two-run homer in the ninth ended the game.

Alt had two hits and two RBI to lead Lewis at the plate. Collin Amsden (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) (2-1) finished with the loss for the Flyers. Michael Sclafani (Oak Brook, Ill./Montini Catholic) started the game and went five innings, allowing five hits and one earned run, striking out four.

Game 2: Lewis 9, Maryville 7
Maryville continued to use the long ball, scoring all seven of its runs on blasts over the fence. It opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning.

Lewis answered in the top of the second as Keaty singled to left, scoring both LeBeau and Krol to make it 3-2. However, the Saints hit two-run homers in the bottom of the second and third innings to take a 7-2 lead.

The Flyers started their comeback in the fourth inning with a home run of their own as Headrick blasted a two-run shot to right center field, scoring Krol. 

In their last at-bats in the seventh inning, Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) tied the game with a three-run homer to force extra innings.

Angelo Cantelo (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic) gave the Flyers the lead with a sacrifice fly, scoring Fox. Barry added to the lead with a single, which scored Alt.

Luke Carlson (Granville, Ill./Putnam County) struck out the first two batters in the eighth, allowed a walk to bring the tying run to the plate, but struck out the final batter to end the game.

Carlson (1-1) earned the win, going 6.2 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs, striking out 10 batters. Fox, Barry (4 RBI) and Headrick had three hits apiece for the Flyers, while Alt, Krol and Keaty all had two hits.
