MARION, Ill. - The No. 4 seed Lewis University baseball team scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to take down No. 8 seed Missouri S&T 4-3 Friday (May 12) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament elimination game.

TEAM RECORDS
Lewis 30-22 | Missouri S&T 24-23

SUMMARY
The Miners scored twice in the fifth inning and once in the sixth inning to pull ahead 3-0.

Lewis got on the board in the top of the seventh as Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) scored an unearned run off the bat of Angelo Cantelo (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic). Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) then lined out to center field, scoring Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) to make it a 3-2 game.

That would be the score entering the ninth inning. George Bilecki (Chicago, Ill./Marist) opened the inning with a double. After a strikeout, Michael Alt (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) singled, advancing Bilecki to third. Cantelo walked, loading the bases. Barry singled, scoring Bilecki to tie the game. Cain Headrick (Custer Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) then drove home the eventual winning run on a fielder's choice, scoring Alt.

The Miners had one more chance in the bottom of the ninth. They opened the inning with a walk but the runner was picked off by Cantelo. Another walk and a hit by pitch put two runners on with one out as Matt Piento (Indian Head Park, Ill./Lyons) was called in to close the game.

Piento only had to pitch to one batter as he forced a line out and the lead runner was doubled off to end the game.

Alt, Barry and Tony Fleischauer (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) had two hits each for the Flyers. Matt Helwig (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) (2-2) picked up the win in relief, allowing one run on no hits in four innings of relief, striking out five. Piento picked up his third save of the year.
