Lewis Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Both Matches During Day One of Walk-On’s UWF Invitational

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The Lewis University women's volleyball team swept both opponents today as the Flyers defeated (RV) Spring Hill College 3-0 then Flagler 3-0 during day one of the Walk-On's UWF Invitational Friday.

SET BREAKDOWN vs. SHC
Set 1: Lewis 25, SHC 17
Both teams each scored six points to start the opening set before Lewis scored back-to-back points to go up 8-6. Spring Hill scored the next point before the Flyers rallied off six straight which was started from a kill by Bella Ray (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic)

SHC was able to cut it down to 19-16 in favor of Lewis but the Flyers rallied for four straight points to jump out to a 23-16 lead. The Badgers got the ensuing point before wrapped it up with two straight points including a kill from Van Loo. 

Set 2: Lewis 25, SHC 21
The Flyers jumped out to an early 6-3 lead after an ace from Gubera. SHC responded with four out of the next five points to tie it at 7-7. 

Both teams would score rallies of two points then Lewis scored three in a row which was capped off by an ace from Chloe Fornetti (Caledonia, Mich./East Kentwood) which made it 18-15 late in the set.

SHC cut it down to one (21-20) late in the set before the Flyers put the match away after scoring three straight which were all kills from Van Loo. The Badgers scored the next point before Van Loo recorded set point with a kill.

Set 3: Lewis 25, SHC 13
Spring Hill scored the opening point then the Flyers recorded four straight points capped off by a block from O'Neill and Alvey to make it 4-1. SHC scored the next two points before Lewis picked up three straight which made it 7-3.

The closest the Badgers made it was 10-7 in favor of Lewis then the Flyers put the set away and the match. The Flyers scored six straight which was capped off by a kill from Hannah Alvey (Mapleton, Ill./Illinois Central College) to make it 21-10. 

Lewis closed out the set by winning the last three points which won the Flyers the 3-0 victory.

SET BREAKDOWN vs. FLAGLER
Set 1: Lewis 25, Flagler 11
Lewis jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after five straight points thanks to a kill from O'Neill. Flagler tried to get back in the set but the Flyers rallied for another five straight points to make it 10-2. 

The closest the Saints got was 17-10 in favor of Lewis then the Flyers rallied for seven straight points to make it 24-10 after a block from Ray and Van Loo. Lewis ended up winning 25-11 after a kill from Van Loo.

Set 2: Lewis 25, Flagler 14
Flagler jumped out an early 4-1 lead before Lewis bounced back and scored four straight to grab a 5-4 lead which included a pair of aces by Gubera and a kill from Ray. The Saints scored the next two points before both teams traded the three points which tied it at 9-9. 

Lewis went on to go up 17-11 after a kill from Ray. FC scored the next point before the Flyers went on a 9-2 rally capped off from a kill from Schlechte to end the set and go up 2-0. 

Set 3: Lewis 25, Flagler 21
Flagler jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Lewis got back-to-back points then the Saints scored four straight to make it 8-3. Lewis eventually rallied and outscored FC 11-5 to take a 14-13 lead after a kill from O'Neill. 

Both teams would go back and forth before the Flyers eventually built up a 21-18 lead after back-to-back kills from Schlechte and Stenman. Flagler responded with back-to-back points to cut it down to one (21-20) but Lewis was able to outscore the Saints 4-1 after two straight kills from Van Loo and one from O'Neill to win the set and the match.

Lewis will be back in action Saturday (Sept. 16) for Day Two of the Walk-On's UWF Invitational as the Flyers take on Charleston at 9 a.m. and host West Florida at 2 p.m.
