KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The No. 19 Lewis University women's volleyball team defeated No. 23 Rockhurst after dropping the first set and won three straight Saturday (Sept. 30).

SET BREAKDOWN
Set 1: Rockhurst 25, Lewis 18
Rockhurst jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first set. Lewis responded with eight out of the next 10 points to tie it at 8-8 after a block from Stenman and Ray.
Moments later, Schlechte gave the Flyers a 12-11 lead after recording a kill. The Hawks responded with four straight points which gave them a 15-12 advantage.
Hannah Alvey (Mapleton, Ill./Illinois Central College) kept Lewis alive in the set after recording a kill to cut it down to one (18-17). Rockhurst was able to close out the set on a 7-1 run to win the opening game 25-18.
Set 2: Lewis 25, Rockhurst 21
Lewis bounced back in the second set to tie it at 1-1 and started off a 6-3 run. The Hawks responded with back-to-back points to make it 6-5 Lewis.
The Flyers extended its lead out to 12-8 after a kill from Schlechte and back-to-back service aces by Stenman. Rockhurst fought back and made it a one-point game (15-14) after going on a run of their own.
Lewis was able to respond and score the next five points after an ace by Fornetti made it 19-14 in favor of the Flyers. Rockhurst had one last push to make it close as the Hawks scored three in a row to make it 19-17 but that was the closest they got.
Set 3: Lewis 25, Rockhurst 20
Lewis jumped out to an early 6-4 lead after a kill from Ray. Rochester responded with the next three out of four points to tie it at 7-7.
The Flyers scored three in a row after kills from Schlechte and Van Loo which made it 10-7. Moments later, Lewis extended its lead out to 17-13 after a pair of kills from Ray.
Rockhurst was able to cut it down to 19-17 late in the set but Lewis responded with back-to-back points. Van Loo gave the Flyers a 25-20 third set victory after ending it on a kill.
Set 4: Lewis 25, Rockhurst 23
Lewis scored the first three points of the set which made it 3-0 early. The Hawks responded with a 4-1 run to tie the set at 4-4.
Sarah Newberry (Fairfield, Ohio/Stephen T Badin) was able to get the Flyers got back on track with a kill and an ace. Both teams went back-and-forth before Lewis gained some separation and scored six in a row capped off by a kill from Schlechte to give the Flyers a 15-11 lead.
Rockhurst had the answer once again and tying the set at 16-16. Both teams traded the next six points to remain tied at 19-19.
The Flyers scored five in a row to force match point including three kills from Schlechte. The Hawks did not go without a fight as RU scored four straight of their own to make it 24-23.
Lewis was able to avoid further damage as Schlechte recorded the kill to win the fourth set and the match.
