GAME SUMMARY
The Flyers began the game on a five point run after a Guluizza layup and a Bueno three-pointer. The Huskies tried to slow down the Lewis offense by zoning off the perimeter, but the Flyers worked there was down hill for shots close to the basket or from the free throw line.
The score quickly became 14-9 Lewis, a layup from
Mercy Lasu (Winnipeg, Canada/D'Youville) added another two to the board. The huskies put one up from beyond the arc shortening the gap, but the Flyers would hold them for the remainder of the first quarter. A steal from Bueno saw her move in transition and hit a layup the other way, then the Flyers forced another turnover for Badali to hit a quick three before the buzzer.
The second quarter began with a 21-12 Lewis lead, the Huskies struck first with a layup and Bueno responded with one of her own right after. Michigan Tech began to generate some momentum and came close to tying the match when a three pointer made it 26-23.
Bueno and Gugliuzza would quickly take over to expand their team's lead once again. Two good free throws by Bueno and a Gugliuzza three would give Lewis their cushion back.
Cierra McNamee (Moline, Ill./Illinois Central College) and Gugliuzza would put up more layups in the final two minutes of the first half. Lastly Badali would steal the ball with the clock running out, she passed it off to Cesarini who hit a jumper to give Lewis a 39-30 lead going into halftime.
Second half scoring started with two points from the bread line for McNamee. The third quarter went back and forth between the two teams, Gugliuzza hit some more free throws and Gabrielle Hover hit a three off of a fast break. The Huskies hit two more free throws which was responded by a Gugliuzza three to make it 52-47 Lewis lead. Gugliuzza would go on to hit two more free throws before the quarter ended as well.
The fourth quarter saw a dip in scoring for both teams, as it was the lowest scoring quarter for either squad. Gugliuzza hit a layup and Bueno made a solo free throw to give Lewis a 10 point lead with the clock running down.
Kree Nunnally (Crystal Lake, Ill./Example Academy) flashed a jumper to extend the lead further, but the remainder of the game was stern defense and missed shots from the two teams.
McNamee landed a jump shot to score the final point of the game for Lewis, which was canceled out by a Huskies layup. When the final buzzer sounded, Lewis held a 68-57 lead and they took home their first victory of the season.
