Lewis Baseball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader; Splits Series at Trevecca Nazarene

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Lewis University baseball team won both games, 6-5 in 10 innings and 10-3 in seven innings, in a doubleheader to finish its weekend series at Trevecca Nazarene in a split.

GAME 1 TEAM RECORDS
Lewis 2-5 | Trevecca Nazarene 6-2

GAME 1 SUMMARY
The first two innings were scoreless, with neither team recording a hit. Angelo Cantelo (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic) led off the top of the third with a double for Lewis, later scoring on an error.

Trevecca struck back with two runs in the fourth to take the lead, adding another run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-1. In the top of the sixth, the Flyers tied it up as Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) doubled in Cain Headrick (Custer Park, Ill./Providence Catholic), later scoring on Chris McDevitt's (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) sacrifice fly.

Luke Brown (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) recorded the first out of the sixth for Lewis and then his day was done after throwing five and a third innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts. The Trojans later scored in the sixth to regain the lead, 4-3.

Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) singled to lead off the seventh for the Flyers, later scoring on a single by Headrick to tie it at four. Trevecca again took the lead back with a run in the bottom half.

A double by Jason Krol (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) and singles by Michael Alt (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) and Mikey Kocen (Beach Park, Ill.) got Lewis another run in the eighth to tie it, 5-5. Christopher Seropian (Chicago, Ill.) threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth, and Collin Amsden (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) had a scoreless ninth to force extra innings.

Kocen doubled home Keaty in the top of the tenth and Amsden got a double play ball in the bottom half to finish the win (1-0), 6-5, for the Flyers.

GAME 2 TEAM RECORDS
Lewis 3-5 | Trevecca Nazarene 6-3

GAME 2 SUMMARY
George Bilecki (Chicago, Ill./Marist) led off game two with a single and Alt laid down a sacrifice bunt but an error by Trevecca led to Bilecki scoring and Alt reaching third. After Alt scored on a sac fly by Kocen, Tony Fleischauer (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) later doubled home Headrick to make it 3-0 Lewis.

The Trojans got one back in the bottom of the first, but a big play by Alt throwing a runner out at home from left field limited the damage. The Flyers got another run in the third off a single by Krol and three walks, with Keaty earning the RBI on his walk that scored Fleischauer to make it 4-1.

Trevecca got within one run after scoring two in the bottom of the fifth. Lewis made sure that didn't last long, scoring six runs in the sixth to pull away.

Headrick hit a sac fly to bring in Alt for the first run, and with two outs the Flyers then went on a rally. Fox singled, Fleischauer walked, and Krol was hit by a pitch to score Kocen. The Trojans changed pitchers, but walks to McDevitt and Keaty brought home two more runs and an error scored McDevitt and Krol to cap off the six-run frame.

Dylan Wolff (Joliet, Ill.) earned the victory (1-0) going four innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on just two hits, walking and striking out three. Luke Carlson (Granville, Ill./Putnam County) earned his first save of the season after retiring each of the final seven Trojan batters, striking out three.

UP NEXT
Lewis baseball is on the road again next weekend, heading to Cedarville, Ohio to play the Cedarville Yellow Jackets. The series will start with a doubleheader Friday (March 1) at 1 p.m. CT.
