Lewis Baseball Beats Cedarville to Open Series Friday

XENIA, Ohio - The Lewis University baseball team won, 8-3, at Cedarville before rain canceled the scheduled second game in the doubleheader.

TEAM RECORDS
Lewis 4-5 | Cedarville 2-8

SUMMARY
Angelo Cantelo (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic) got the scoring started for Lewis with a solo home run in the top of the second. An error on Cedarville helped the Flyers score again in the second, with Michael Alt (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) hitting a sacrifice fly to drive in Chris McDevitt (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita).

A three-base error on Lewis led to two runs for the Yellow Jackets in the bottom half of the inning to tie it at two. Two hits and a walk led to another Cedarville run in the third to take a 3-2 lead.

Michael Sclafani (Oak Brook, Ill./Montini Catholic) shut things down from there, putting the Yellow Jackets down 1-2-3 in the fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the sixth, Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) hit an RBI double to tie the game, and Cain Headrick (Custer Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) later singled to bring him home to give the Flyers the lead. George Bilecki (Chicago, Ill./Marist) then singled in Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) and Tony Fleischauer (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Mikey Kocen (Beach Park, Ill.) and make it 6-3 Lewis.

Keaty helped create another run in the seventh, singling then stealing second before reaching third on a balk and scoring on an infield single by Alt.

Sclafani tossed another scoreless inning in the sixth, then came out after a leadoff single in the seventh, finishing with three runs (one earned) on five hits allowed, walking one and striking out five in six-plus innings to earn the win (2-1). Luke Carlson (Granville, Ill./Putnam County) came on and got out of the inning by striking out the next three batters in order.

Two errors by Cedarville allowed Bilecki to score in the eighth and make it 8-3 Lewis. Carlson shut down the eighth and ninth, earning the save by going three innings allowing no runs, no hits and no walks while striking out four to close out the victory.
