WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Lewis University softball team split both games Tuesday (March 12) during the second day of the PFX Spring Games. The Flyers fell to Indiana University-Pennsylvania 3-2 in eight innings then defeated Shepherd University 4-3.

GAME 2 SUMMARY
Lewis struck first in the opening inning after
Meghan Bontrager (Milford, IN/Northridge) drove home
Erica Hoffman (Hebron, IN/Boone Grove High School) to make it 1-0.
Anna Frafjord (Sussex, WI/Hamilton High School) extended the Flyers lead to 3-0 in the fifth after connecting on a two-run single which scored Gabi Nillies and
Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, IL/Harry D. Jacobs High School).
Payton Wuske (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln-Way East) got an insurance run in the top of the sixth after hitting a sacrifice fly, scoring Bontrager. The fourth run turned out to be a crucial run for Lewis.
Shepherd rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Rams plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Garden was able to escape further damage and get the ground out to secure the victory.
Garden (5-2) recorded the complete game victory after going all seven frames, giving up four hits, allowing three runs, issuing two walks and striking out nine.

GAME 1 SUMMARY
IU-P struck first in the top of the second inning to grab an early 1-0 lead. Lewis got it back in the bottom of the third as Garden singled home Nilles which tied the game at 1-1.
Both teams did not score in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The Crimson Hawks got a pair of unearned runs in the top of eighth due to placing a runner on second in extras to grab a 3-1 lead.
The Flyers looked to respond to extend the game in the bottom of the eighth. Bontrager singled home
Grace Kmak (Mokena, Ill.) which made it 3-2.
Two batters later, Wuske walked to make it bases-loaded in the bottom of the eighth. IU-P was able escape further damage and got the final out on a flyout to center.
Wuske (2-2) suffered the defeat in the circle, after going all eight innings, allowing five hits, giving up three runs (one earned), walking one and striking out six.
