Lewis Softball Sweeps Southwest Baptist Sunday

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Lewis University softball team took on Southwest Baptist Sunday (March 17). Lewis won the first game 8-0 then defeated the Bearcats 10-2 in six innings for the second.

GAME 1 SUMMARY
The first game became a home run derby as Lewis hit six home runs in the contest by four different players. Evie Calderon (Chicago, IL/Whitney Young) started the scoring in the top of the second with her solo shot to left.

One inning later in the third, Erica Hoffman (Hebron, IN/Boone Grove High School) doubled the lead and made it 2-0 with her solo home run to left center. Anna Frafjord (Sussex, WI/Hamilton High School) joined the club in the next inning during the fourth as the sophomore and extended the lead to 4-0 with her solo shot over the left field fence. 

Both teams were scoreless in the fifth before Lewis was able to break through again in the sixth as Calderon recorded her second home run of the day, this time a two-run homer after Frafjord walked made it 5-0. Jalyn Powell (Tolono, IL/Unity) joined the home run club with a two-run shot to left to make it 7-0 Lewis.

Frafjord joined the two-home run club as she connected on her second with a solo shot to left. 

Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, IL/Harry D. Jacobs High School) (8-2) threw her second straight complete shutout for the Flyers. The junior threw seven shutout innings only allowing two hits and striking out nine while walking none.

GAME 2 SUMMARY
Southwest Baptist struck first in the bottom of the first as the Bearcats connected on a solo homerun to left to make it 1-0. Lewis went on to score 10 unanswered runs in the next five innings including eight in the second. 

Garden started the scoring with an RBI single to center which scored Payton Wuske (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln-Way East) to tie it at 1-1. Hoffman gave Lewis the lead after her patience paid off and she drew a bases-loaded walk which scored Kristen Graham (Mapleton, IL/Illini Bluffs High School)

Powell made it 3-1 Lewis after reaching on a fielder's choose which scored Grace Kmak (Mokena, Ill.). Frafjord recorded her third home run of the day and first of the second game with a grand slam to center which scored Powell, Hoffman and Garden to expand the Lewis lead to 7-1. 

Graham extended it out to 8-1 Flyers after her RBI single drove home Meghan Bontrager (Milford, IN/Northridge). Both teams did not score in the third, fourth or fifth innings. 

Frafjord made it 10-1 in favor of Lewis as the sophomore drove home Mackenzie Sheehan (Kansasville, Wis./Union Grove) with her fourth homerun of the day. The Bearcats got one back in the bottom half of the sixth but Lewis was able to get out of it for the 10-2 victory. 

Allie Wondrasek (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln-Way West High School) (7-0) remained unbeaten for the Flyers this year after throwing a complete game for Lewis. The sophomore threw six innings of two run ball, allowing four hits, walking one and striking out five.

Lewis Softball will be back Tuesday, March 19 as the Flyers travel to Ferris State to take on the Bulldogs for a doubleheader starting at noon CT.
