SET BREAKDOWN
Set 1: Hawai'i 25, Lewis 9
Hawai'i took four of the first five points before Drolsum earned a kill to make it 4-2. The Rainbow Warriors just kept charging, though, using a 9-1 run to bring the score to 13-3.
Lewis took two of the next three points with a pair of kills by
Daniel Haber (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach) but could not build much momentum. Another Hawai'i run made it 20-6. The Flyers only earned three more points in the set, two on Rainbow Warrior service errors and one on a Haber kill, before Hawai'i took the set.
Set 2: Hawai'i 25, Lewis 18
The Rainbow Warriors started set two by taking the first five points before a triple block by Lewis ended the run. Both sides went back-and-forth from there until the Flyers went on a 6-2 charge, started by a kill and solo block by Baggs and finished by two straight kills by Roquet, to cut the deficit to 15-13.
Hawai'i had the answer, though, using a 5-0 run to restore the lead to 20-13. Lewis responded with three of the next four points, with a kill by
John Davis (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) and a solo block by Roquet to get within five at 21-16.
The Rainbow Warriors finished the set on a service ace, as Hawai'i had a 9-0 advantage in aces across the first two sets combined.
Set 3: Hawai'i 25, Lewis 21
Set three started with the Rainbow Warriors once again taking an early lead at 2-0. Moments later, a 3-0 charge from the Flyers with kills by
Isaac Benka (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) and Baggs made it 5-4 Lewis.
After Hawai'i got it back even, the Flyers had another 3-0 run capped off by an ace from Drolsum to take a 9-6 lead. From there, though, the Rainbow Warriors worked its way back in front at 11-10.
Lewis took the next two points to regain the lead but Hawai'i used a 3-0 push to take the advantage at 14-12. Later, a 5-1 run by the Rainbow Warriors made it 20-15.
A 3-0 run by the Flyers on three straight Hawai'i errors later got Lewis within three, 23-20 but that was as close as it would get as the Rainbow Warriors won the match on an ace.
