Lewis Men's Lacrosse Wins in Overtime on Senior Day; Clinches GLVC Regular Season Title

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- The Lewis University men's lacrosse team won in overtime, 14-13, over No. 19 Rockhurst Saturday (April 27) on senior day at Lewis Stadium. The win secures the Flyers a share of GLVC regular season title and the right to host the conference tournament next weekend.

After the game, the Flyers honored seniors Kai George (New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada/New Westminster Secondary School), Hunter Loprino (Woodstock, Illinois/St. Viator HS / Belmont Abbey College), Kevin Blaz (McHenry, Illinois/Marian Central Catholic HS), Riah Rathe (Chanhassen, Minnesota/Chanhassen HS), Andrew Schermerhorn (Appleton, Wisconsin/St. Francis Xavier HS / Canisius College), Ben Mansur (West St. Paul, Minnesota/St. Thomas Academy / Wesleyan University), Nate McLean (Crystal Lake, Illinois/Crystal Lake Central HS), Zack Merwin (Eagan, Minnesota/Eagan HS) and Nate Matheu.

GAME SUMMARY
FIRST QUARTER: Rockhurst 2, Lewis 1
Lewis scored first as Drew Andre (Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School) found Dalep for the goal. Rockhurst struck back with a pair of goals to go ahead 2-1 before the end of the first quarter.

Rathe made six saves in the opening frame to help keep things close.

SECOND QUARTER: Rockhurst 4, Lewis 2
The Hawks scored first in the second quarter before Malikye Good (Windsor, Ontario, Canada/St. Thomas of Villanova Catholic HS) got on the board for the Flyers to make it 3-2. Rockhurst scored the next two goals to push the lead to 5-2.

Lewis struck back as Clement found the back of the net with 5:15 left before the half. The Hawks scored one more goal in the frame to take a 6-3 lead into the half.

THIRD QUARTER: Rockhurst 4, Lewis 4
Rockhurst scored the first two goals of the third to push the lead to a game-high five goals, 8-3. Luke Schroeder (Plymouth, Minnesota/Totino-Grace HS) scored the first goal of the second half for the Flyers before the Hawks scored again to make it 9-4.

Lewis then went on a charge, scoring the next three goals to get within two. Boyenko found Clement for the score, then Clement assisted Good for the next Flyers' goal.

Zach Buddelmeyer (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro HS) scored next for Lewis after taking a pass from Dalep to make it 9-7. Rockhurst scored one more goal before the quarter was over to take a 10-7 lead into the fourth.

Rathe made five more stops in the third quarter for the Flyers.

FOURTH QUARTER: Lewis 6, Rockhurst 3
The Hawks scored twice to open the final period and make its lead 12-7. Boyenko scored off of a great pass from McLean to make it 12-8.

Then, Boyenko found Kendrick for another goal to get Lewis within three, but Rockhurst answered with a goal to bring its lead to 13-9. The Flyers responded as Dalep scored with an assist from Schermerhorn.

Lewis kept coming, with Clement assisting on goals by Schermerhorn and then Dalep to make it 13-12 with one minute to play. Then, with the Flyers a man up, Clement scooped up a ground ball and scored himself to tie it at 13.

OVERTIME: Lewis 1, Rockhurst 0
In overtime, Lewis won the draw and after a timeout Clement scored a wrap-around goal for the game-winner just 36 seconds in.

FINAL SCORE: Lewis 14, Rockhurst 13

UP NEXT
Lewis men's lacrosse will host the GLVC Tournament next weekend at Lewis Stadium. As the No. 1 seed, the Flyers will play No. 4 seed Indianapolis Thursday (May 2) at 4 p.m. CT.
