Women's Volleyball Falls to No. 14 Ferris State on Day Two of Midwest Crossover

Hammond, Ind. – GLIAC-member No. 14 Ferris State limited Lewis to a sub-.100 hitting percentage as they won, 3-0, on day two of the Midwest Crossover.

With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 16-4 while Lewis moved to 12-9 at the end of the two day tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Down 1-0 after Ferris State took the first set 25-14, the Flyers found themselves tied 8-8 with the Bulldogs early in the second stanza. The red and white gained some breathing room as kills from seniors Emma O'Neil and Mya Bajramovic paced a short 4-2 spurt that gave Lewis a 12-10 edge. Still, Ferris State had an answer as an untimely Flyers attack error spurred a 7-2 run for the Bulldogs that gave them the lead for good, 17-14.

Despite Lewis cutting the deficit to one, 17-16, Ferris State never relinquished their lead and held on to win the second set, 25-20 and take a 2-0 match lead.

The Bulldogs sealed the 3-0 victory in the third set as they posted a hitting percentage of .367 (13-2-30) compared to .000 (10-10-57) for Lewis.

Emily May led the Bulldogs with 11 kills while Hayley Wegener notched a team-best 30 assists and 13 digs. As a team, Ferris State closed the match hitting at a clip of .287 (42-9-115) compared to .052 (31-25-115) for Lewis.

Freshman Ann Kelly Velikov (Orvault, France/C.E.N.S.) led the Flyers offense with eight kills while junior Lily King (Channahon, Ill./Kent State) supplied 13 assists. On the defensive side of the ball, junior Elena Gubera (Jamestown, Ind./Western Boone) led the match with 18 digs and a team-best two aces.

  • Today marked the 43rd all-time meeting against the two schools. Despite being in two separate conferences, the Flyers and Bulldogs have met every year since 2022.
  • Gubera notched 20-or-more digs for the fifth time in seven matches.
