Box Score Romeoville Ill.- Despite being down 2-0 and tying the match 2-2, the University of Indianapolis held on to defeat the Lewis University women's volleyball team, 3-2, on Oct. 25 at Neil Carey Arena.
With the win from the Greyhounds, they advanced their record to 16-7 and a conference record of 6-1 while the Flyers now sit at 12-10 and a conference record of 3-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Down 2-0, UIndy struck first in the beginning of the the third set. Both teams were neck and neck for the majority of the set and wasn't until a kill by
Lauren Buxton (Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) which allowed the Flyers to take lead at 11-10. They used the momentum and never looked back with a securing a win in set three with kill by
Sarah Newberry (Fairfield, Ohio/Stephen T Badin) ending the third set at 25-15.
The beginning of set four both the Flyers and Greyhounds battled for points.
Lauren Buxton's (Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) kill helped the Flyers gain an advantage at 4-3. They went on to score another two consecutive points with one being another kill from Buxton. Later in the set, with a string of four kills, with two from
Emma O'Neill (Papillion, Neb./Papillion La Vista South) and two from
Lauren Buxton (Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains), the Flyers took a seven-point lead at 16-9. The Greyhounds were never able to comeback after and the set ended at 25-19 and tied the match, 2-2.
Caught in a back and forth in the final set, the game tied was tied at 7-7. The Flyers were able to secure two points in a row with kills from
Marin Grossman (Hortonville, Wis./Hortonville) and
Lauren Buxton (Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains). Unfortunately, the Flyers were never able to catch up to the Greyhounds with the visitors winning, 15-12 and taking the match, 3-2.
Lauren Buxton (Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) led the Flyers with 23 kills and
Lily King (Channahon, Ill./Kent State) had a total of 38 assists. King was also able to top off 21 digs. Lewis ended the match with a hitting percentage of .228 (64-5-189)
Paige Parlanti led the Greyhounds with a total of 18 kills and Carly Fonda had 45 assists. Macy Bruton had 24 digs. UIndy ended the match with a hitting percentage of .182 (62-10-209)
MATCH NOTES
- Lily King (Channahon, Ill./Kent State) had a career high number of assists (38) and digs (21).
- Lauren Buxton (Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) had a career high of 23 kills and 24.5 points
- The Flyers had nine more digs compared to the Greyhounds.
