Lewis Women's Basketball Claims First Conference Win of Season

Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University women's basketball team opened conference play on Monday (Dec. 1), earning their first GLVC win of the season with a victory over UIndy.

IMPACT PLAYERS
Yahaira Bueno (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) shot a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc for a total of 15 points on top of her 6 rebounds and 3 assists. She was trailed by Jasmine Jones (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook) with 13 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist and Gabi Hoover (Mishawaka, Ind./La Lumiere) with 11 points.

The Greyhounds' Patricia Chikambawas the games leading scorer with 21 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The opening quarter ended in a 15-15 stalemate, though Lewis set the tone early with a 5-0 run. The teams traded baskets until the second quarter, when the Flyers seized control by outscoring the Greyhounds 19-7.

Bueno and Hoover sparked the surge with three consecutive three-pointers, while Cesarini and Jones kept the paint active with layups. Hoover added more threes to close the half, giving Lewis a commanding lead.

The second half was more balanced, with Lewis edging UIndy 29-27. Still, the Flyers' first-half cushion held firm. In the third quarter, Mallory Ramage (Mattoon, IL/Loyola-Chicago), Kree Nunnally (Crystal Lake, Ill./Example Academy), and Cesarini contributed layups and mid-range shots to keep the Greyhounds at bay. Hoover and Jones then sealed the win with strong play down the stretch in the fourth.

  GAME NOTES
  • Nunnally made her season debut tonight, last season she appeared in 29 contests starting in one.
  • This was the 88th contest between the two schools dating back to 1983, Lewis is now 51-37 overall.
  • There are now five players in triple digit minutes for the Flyers with Hoover and Jones crossing the 100 minute threshold. Justina Hernandez (Carol Stream, Ill./UW-Milwaukee) is close with 90 total minutes played.
