Lewis Baseball Sweeps Upper Iowa Sunday; Flyers Win All Four Games This Weekend

 CRESTWOOD, Ill. -- The Lewis University baseball team swept Upper Iowa Sunday (March 3) at Ozinga Field. The Flyers won the first game 3-2 then emerged victorious 7-3 in the second which gave them a 4-0 sweep this weekend. 

GAME 1: Lewis 3, Upper Iowa 2

SUMMARY
Upper Iowa struck first with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second for an early 1-0 lead. 
 
Lewis grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third after Mikey Kocen (Beach Park, Ill./UNC-Pembroke) ripped a two-run single, scoring Cole Nelson (St. Charles, Ill/Lenoir Rhyne) and Jackson Hunley (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie)
 
George Bilecki (Chicago, Ill./Marist) made it 3-1 in the fourth inning after hitting an RBI triple to right center that scored Cain Headrick (Custer Park, Ill./Providence Catholic)
 
The Peacocks were able to get one back in the fifth inning, making it 3-2 in favor of the Flyers. That score would hold the rest of the day, with Lewis winning 3-2.


Brendan Lawry (Bolingbrook, Ill./Eckerd College) (1-0) recorded the win on the mound for Lewis after pitching five innings, allowing five hits, giving up two runs, walking four and striking out six.
 
Jackson Bruno (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame Prep) picked up his second save of the season after throwing a 1-2-3 seventh inning and collecting a pair of strikeouts.

GAME 2: Lewis 7, Upper Iowa 3

TEAM RECORDS
Lewis 5-3 | Upper Iowa 3-7

SUMMARY
Both teams remained scoreless in the first three innings keeping the game score at 0-0. 
 
Lewis broke through in the fourth inning with a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. Nelson scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. 
 
Kocen doubled the advantage after hitting a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Tyler Phommachanhom (Plainfield, Ill/Parkland CC) from third to make it 2-0. 
 
The Flyers doubled their lead in the sixth after both teams were held off the scoreboard in the fifth. Kocen ripped a triple to right scoring Daugherty to make it 3-0.
 
Kocen scored the next batter on a passed ball extending the Lewis lead out to 4-0. 
 
Upper Iowa got three runs back in the top of seventh inning to cut into the deficit at 4-3.  
 
Lewis built a cushion with three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Jason Krol (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) reached on a suicide squeeze bunt scoring Bilecki. 
 
Nelson extended the lead to 6-3 after his RBI single to center scored Hunley from second. 
 
Phommachanhom made it 7-3 with an RBI single that scored Krol.
 
Abraham Sanchez (San Diego, CA/Monte Vista High School) (1-1) picked up the win in the circle after throwing four scoreless innings, allowing one hit, walking four and striking out two.
 
Carter Endisch (Pewaukee, Wis.) pitched 1.2 innings of relief and recorded a pair of strikeouts.
 
Daniel Rosado (Burbank, Ill.) pitched the ninth and got the three outs needed for the victory.
 
UP NEXT
Lewis will be back in action for a four-game series to begin Great Lakes Valley Conference play against Illinois-Springfield. The first game is scheduled for Friday, March 7 at 2 p.m. CT.
