No. 9 Lewis Men's Volleyball Remains Unbeaten With Sweep of St. Thomas Aquinas

Baggs Jr. posts program-record 11 blocks in three-set match

UNIVERSITY PARK, Penn. - The No. 9 Lewis University men's volleyball team moved to 4-0 on the season with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-17) win over St. Thomas Aquinas Friday (Jan. 16) at Penn State University. The Flyers have yet to lose a set this year.

IMPACT PLAYERS
Deyan Todorov (Sofia, Bulgaria/51st Secondary) had eight kills to lead Lewis. Daniel Haber (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach) had seven kills, six block assists and four service aces, while Shawn Baggs Jr. (Gilbert, Ariz./Casteel HS) recorded six kills and 11 block assists and Oguzhan Oguz (Bursa, Turkey/Ocean) totaled six kills and five block assists. Diego Estrada (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Adianez) dished out 26 assists.

Jakob Schwarz recorded 10 assists for St. Thomas Aquinas.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After the teams traded points to start the match, the Flyers reeled off nine straight points to take a 10-1 lead. Haber had a pair of service aces in the run, while Baggs had a pair of kills and a block assist. 

Lewis built the lead to as many as 12 points at 19-7 before the 25-14 set win.

The Spartans held a 9-7 lead in the second set before the Flyers took control, using four straight points to pull ahead 11-9 as Estrada finished the run with a service ace. Lewis built the lead to 16-13 before three straight Spartan points evened the score at 16-16.

Lewis came back with a 6-1 scoring run to lead 22-17 thanks to a pair of blocks, a kill by Baggs and a service ace from Cameron Hoying (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales). Josh Weyerhaeuser (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) ended the set at 25-20 with a kill.

St. Thomas Aquinas opened the third set with a 4-1 advantage before the Flyers reeled off seven straight points to take an 8-4 lead. Haber finished off the run with a pair of service aces.

Later in the set a block by Baggs and Haber extended the lead to 16-9. The Spartans would get no closer than six points in the rest of the way as the Flyers cruised to a 25-17 win.

GAME NOTES
  • Baggs set a program record for blocks in a three-set match with 11, breaking the record of 10 set by Bobby Walsh in 2014 and Jacob Schmiegelt in 2016. It was also a career-high.
  • Lewis held the Spartans to a .033 hitting percentage, a season-low allowed for the Flyers.
  • The Flyers had 10 aces for the second straight match.
  • Lewis had a .410 hitting percentage to go along with 14 blocks.
