ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University women's basketball team defeated Maryville 70-65 Thursday (Feb. 12) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers move to 15-9 overall with the win, 11-4 in the GLVC, while the Saints fall to 18-6 overall, 12-4 in the GLVC.
IMPACT PLAYERS
Ally Cesarini (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) led four Flyers in double figures with 15 points.
Kree Nunnally (Crystal Lake, Ill./Example Academy)Â scored 14 points (6 rebounds), while
Mallory Ramage (Mattoon, Ill./Loyola Chicago) had 13 points (6 rebounds) and
Yahaira Bueno (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) scored 12.
Lindsey Schadewalt led Maryville with 19 points, while Claire Lueken had 14 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams traded baskets for the first part of the first quarter with Lewis taking its first lead at the 5:11 mark on a Cesarini basket to take a 9-8 lead. Maryville came back to take a 13-12 lead before the Flyers scored the final eight points of the quarter to lead 20-13 after one quarter.
A Cesarini layup to open the second quarter built the lead to 22-13 before Maryville reeled off the next four points. The teams traded scores for the rest of the quarter with the Flyers leading 28-20 at the half.
The Flyers lead remained between four and eight points for much of the third quarter until the Saints got to within two points at 36-34 with 2:50 left in the third. The Flyers led 44-41 after three quarters.
Maryville scored the first six points of the fourth quarter, making it nine straight points overall to take a 47-44 lead with 6:32 remaining in the game. A Nunnally layup stopped the run momentarily, but Maryville followed with the next six points to take a 53-46 lead with 4:12 left.
That would be the final points of regulation for the Saints as the Flyers scored the final seven points of the quarter to tie the score at 53-53. A Cesarini layup and a three-pointer from Ramage cut the deficit to two points and Nunnally tied the game with 1:01 remaining.
The teams traded leads for much of the overtime with the Flyers taking the lead for good on a jumper by Nunnally with 1:33 remaining at 64-63. Bueno scored five points down the stretch to finish off the win.
GAME NOTES
- The Flyers held the Saints to 34.4 percent shooting from the field (22-of-64), while connecting on 45.8 percent of their own field goals (27-of-59).
- Lewis converted 6-of-7 field goals in the overtime session (85.7%).
- The Flyers swept the Saints in the regular season for the second straight year.
