Box Score Romeoville, Ill. - The No. 14 Lewis University men's volleyball team broke the heart of Rockhurst as they swept the Hawks Friday night at Neil Carey Arena.
With the win, Lewis improved to 7-6 while the Hawks dipped to 4-8
IMPACT PLAYERS
Cameron Hoying (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) paced Lewis with 12 kills while
Diego Estrada (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Adianez) tallied 34 assists. On the defensive side of the ball,
Nico Paula (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Preparatory School) amassed a game-high 10 digs while at the net, Hoying,
Deyan Todorov (Sofia, Bulgaria/51st Secondary) and
Shawn Baggs Jr. (Gilbert, Ariz./Casteel HS) each tallied four blocks. As a team, Lewis hit at a clip of .356 (44-13-87) compared to .084 (26-19-83) for Rockhurst.
Shay Spadaro and Quentin Huhman each had seven kills for the Hawks. Tyler Zippay notched 21 assists while Will Stuphen had seven digs in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Down 14-13 midway through the first set, the Flyers took flight as a service error sparked a 7-2 run that put Lewis in the drivers seat, 20-16. The two sides exchanged the final handful of scores with Hoying completing the red and whites 25-21 set one win with a kill.
Lewis dominated the second set as they hit at a clip of .500 (12-2-20) compared to -.111 (5-7-18) for Rockhurst en route to their 25-14 set two win and 2-0 match lead.
In the final frame, the Flyers led late, 24-21, but Rockhurst flipped the script as they embarked on a 4-0 run to tie the frame, 24-24. After trading the next two points, Lewis sealed the 3-0 victory with a 3-0 run paced by kills from Hoying and Todorov to win, 28-26 and complete the sweep of Rockhurst.
