Romeoville, Ill. - On a Friday afternoon that featured wind gusts of over 40 miles per hour, the No. 11 Lewis University men's lacrosse team stayed grounded as they defeated Davenport, 12-6 at Lewis Stadium.
With the win, the Flyers improved to 3-1 while the Panthers shifted to 1-2.Â
IMPACT PLAYERS
Malikye Good (Windsor, Ontario, Canada/St. Thomas of Villanova Catholic HS) paced the Lewis offense with three goals while
Carter Korzenski (Orchard Park, N.Y./Limestone) and
Paul Ruskoski (Tulsa, Oklahoma/Bishop Kelley HS) each provided a team-best two assists.
Lance McCann (Elmhurst,Illinois/York Community HS) snagged a team-high four ground balls with his teammate
AJ Baumley (Huntley, Illinois/Huntley HS) caused two turnovers. In net,
Caden Donahue (Hugo, Minnesota/Mahtomedi HS) earned the win, allowing zero goals and make three saves in 30 minutes of action.Â
Jayden Ashley led the Davenport attack with two goals while Tyler Burd collected a game-high six ground balls. Sean House played the full 60 minutes, making 16 saves on 28 shots.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lewis took off early as they tallied three goals in the opening 6:57 of play to force a Davenport timeout. The Flyers attack continued to pester the Panthers and added in three more scores before the frame ended to lead 6-0 after 15 minutes of play.Â
The red and white's offense didn't slow down in the start of the second as Korzenski and
Fritz Whalen (Buford, Georgia/Buford High School) each found the back of the net for Lewis in the opening five minutes of action to extend the Lewis lead.
Nick Sheedy (Rosemount, Minnesota/Rosemount HS) and Good each registered a goal for the Flyers before the half ended to give Lewis a 10-0 advantage at the break.Â
Out of the halftime break, the two sides exchanged goals throughout the third quarter with
Kohl Wesner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and
Jake Wynecoop (Maple Valley, Wash./Tahoma) each finding the twine in the third. Davenport tallied four goals in the fourth quarter to end the contest.Â
GAME NOTES
- Lewis is now 8-0 all-time against Davenport
- Wynecoop's goal was his first of the season
- Lewis kept an opponent scoreless in a half for the first time since March 10, 2023, when they held Lees-McRae College to zero second half goals.
- There were 14 penalites in the contest with 11 called on Davenport
- Lewis has won at least three of the their first four games of the year each season since 2022
