Charlotte, N.C. - It was a successful day for the No. 15 Lewis University men's volleyball team as they secured a 3-0 sweep of Queens Friday evening.
IMPACT PLAYERS
Cameron Hoying (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) led the team tonight in kills, putting a total of 16 on the board in three sets.
Diego Estrada (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Adianez) was running the court, recording 34 assists.
Nico Paula (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Preparatory School) stayed strong defensively, racking up a total of 14 digs against Queens. Lewis ended with a solid hitting percentage of .302.
For Queens, Kaden Saurer totaled 9 kills. Charlie Podgorny recorded 33 assists, with eight digs from Casey Maas.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lewis started off set one strong with a service run from Haber. As the game progressed, the Flyers struggled defensively, falling behind 12-17. Down the stretch, the two teams fought it out, with kills from Todorov and Hoying keeping Lewis within striking distance. After a back-and-forth battle that featured multiple set points for both sides, Lewis capitalized late. A key kill from Haber and a clutch finish from Hoying sealed the extended set victory, 29-27.
Lewis carried their winning momentum into the second set, starting with an early 6-2 lead, highlighted by two service aces from Haber and aggressive play at the net. Queens did not back down and responded, leaving the score tied 12-12 midway through the set. Lewis regained control late with strong offensive connections between Estrada and his hitters, along with a block assist from Baggs and Haber on set point, securing the 25-21 win and a 2-0 match lead.
Lewis maintained composure throughout the third set, never letting Queens get too far ahead. Their strong presence at the net helped them finish set three 25-22 and complete the sweep.
MATCH NOTES
- This is Lewis's 7th straight win over Queens dating back to their first game in 2021.
- The team's hitting percentage tonight of .302 was significantly higher than their season average of .272.
