Marquette, Mich. - Northern Michigan used a strong second and third quarter to pull away and defeat the Lewis University women's lacrosse team, 14-8, Tuesday afternoon at the Superior Dome.
With the win, the Flyers moved to 1-2 while the Wildcats improved to 4-0.
IMPACT PLAYERS
Josie Lakosky and Avery Lorinser led Northern Michigan with four points each with Lakosky tallying a game-high seven points as well. Lauren Espositio collected five ground balls and made seven saves for the win.
Jade McKinnon (Coquitlam, BC, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) paced Lewis with four goals and five total points.
Daniella Winterlik (Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada/Terry Fox) grabbed three ground balls while
Alexis Riley (Viola, Del./Caesar Rodney High School) caused a season-high four turnovers. Winterlik also won a season-high five draw controls as well. In net,
Sophia Fountain (Berkeley, Ill./Montini Catholic High School) made four saves in net for the red and white.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Down 1-0 midway through the first quarter, the Flyers took flight as McKinnon's first goal of the day sparked a short 3-0 spurt that propelled Lewis ahead, 3-1, with 4:44 left in the opening frame.
Northern Michigan took over for the remainder of the half as they limited Lewis to just one goal while scoring six of their own to enter halftime with a 7-4 lead.
Out of the break, the Wildcats continued to roll as they rattled off the first three goals of the third stanza before
Ryan Paterson (Pitt Meadows, BC, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School) found the back of the net at the 1:06 mark on the woman-up situation to stop the scoring run for Northern Michigan and make it an 11-5 contest.
Both sides traded goals throughout the remainder of the third and start of the fourth quarter with Lewis outscoring Northern Michigan, 3-2 in the final stanza.
GAME NOTES
- Today marked the seventh all-time meeting between the two sides
- McKinnon tallied 11 total shots with seven on goal. Both represented the most by any Lewis player this year.
- Freshman Devyn Hartley (Coquitlam, BC, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) won three draw controls against the Wildcats, the most in a game for her this season.
