Baseball Wraps Weekend in Bluegrass State

Crestview Hills, Ky. -- The Lewis University baseball team concluded their four game series against Thomas More University with a doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 28).

Their overall record stands at 4-8 as the Flyers have played their final games of the month of February.

GAME ONE RECAP
The first game was full of pitching and well-rounded defense from both teams in the seven inning outing.

Lewis stranded two runners on base in the top of the second inning with pitcher Kellen Sandhas escaping the jam for the Saints.

Thomas More also left two runners on base in the bottom of third inning with redshirt junior Vince Gohlke (New Berlin, Wis.) pitching out of it with a swinging strikeout.

The Saints opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning after a mostly defensive game. After a walk and a single to open the inning, Lewis brought in freshman pitcher Pablo Herrera (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) in relief, and after a strikeout and a stolen base, Theodore Bosio singled to right for a clutch two RBI single to put Thomas More up 2-0 late.

Coming in as a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh inning, O'Brien led with a leadoff triple and scored on a groundout by junior Israel Delgado (Machesney Park, Ill.) to decrease the deficit to just 2-1. The Flyers weren't able to mount the comeback though as the Saints went on to win behind great pitching from Sandhas who earned the win going five full innings giving up zero runs and striking out four.

GAME TWO RECAP
Freshman Constantine Coins produced a leadoff walk for the Flyers in the top of the first and later came around to score to make 1-0 after junior Kyle Peterson (Orland Park, Ill/Carl Sandburg) singled down the left field line.

Coins came up big again in the top of the second where he brought in senior Tylor Phommachanhom (Plainfield, Ill/Parkland CC) on an RBI single after Phommachanhom reached on an error. Soon after, freshman Jimmy Spellman (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame College of Prep) added another insurance run on for Lewis with a sacrifice fly to put the Flyers up 3-0.

The Saints erased that deficit they were facing in the bottom half of the second adding four runs on four hits. Three of the four runs came on RBI singles from Chad Atchley, Jack Geers, and Sean O'Donnell.

In the top of the third, the back-and-forth offense continued with a leadoff homer from senior Daniel O'Brien (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) to tie the game at 4-4. Phommachanhom put Lewis back on top later in the inning, bringing in the go-ahead run at 5-4 on an RBI single to center.

With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, Coins worked another walk to cash in O'Brien from third to make the Lewis lead 6-4.

The Saints biggest hit came in the bottom half of the seventh where Geers hit a two run homerun to center to even the score once again at 6-6.

Going into the top of the eighth inning tied, the Flyers took control by getting runners on and bringing two around to score. Sophomore Chris Daugherty (Chicago, Ill/Brother Rice) hit an RBI single while freshman Griffin Zweeres (Morris, Ill./Morris) gathered an RBI on a fielder's choice to make it 8-6. After switching to a new arm for the Saints, Coins worked his third walk of the game to bring in Zweeres and push the Flyer lead to 9-6.

Thomas More was able to get two more runners on in the bottom of the ninth but could not bring anyone in as freshman Lucas Acevedo (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) ended the game with a save while graduate student pitcher Ben Catrambone (Western Springs, Ill.) collected the win going three innings allowing two earned runs and two strikeouts.
