Women's Lacrosse Edged by Davenport

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Lewis Women's Lacrosse team fell to Davenport University 11-10 at DU turf field on Sunday.

Davenport moved to 1-0 while Lewis shifted to 3-3. 
 

IMPACT PLAYERS
Gabby Basha led Davenport with 4 goals while Kacie Stolarek had 7 ground balls. Isabelle Bonillo had 9 saves on 14 shots on goal and secured the win. 

Daniella Winterlik (Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada/Terry Fox) had a team leading 4 goals while Amelia Procyk (Coquitlam, BC, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) had 2 assists and Alexis Riley (Viola, Del./Caesar Rodney High School) had 4 ground balls. In net, Sophia Fountain (Berkeley, Ill./Montini Catholic High School) had 7 saves. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
Davenport came out hot by scoring the first three goals of the game for an early lead. Lewis responded by scoring back to back goals from Jade McKinnon (Coquitlam, BC, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) and Eliana Cappellini (Burnaby, BC, Canada/Burnaby North Secondary School) to make it a 3-2 contest. Davenport scored two more goals to bring it to 5-2 at the end of frame one.

Georgia Kodytek (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake South) started off the second quarter with two back to back goals followed by two more Lewis goals making it a 6-5 contest in favor of the Flyers. Davenport then scored one goal of their own followed by two more Lewis goals to end enter the locker room with an 8-6 advantage.

Coming out of halftime, Davenport scored three unanswered goals in the third quarter to reclaim the lead, 9-8. Despite a late push from the Flyers, both sides found the back of the net twice with Davenport holding on for the 11-10 win.

GAME NOTES

  • Today marked the fifth meeting between the two sides
  • The game saw a total of 44 turnovers 
  • Winterlik has scored at least two goals in all but one game this year
