St. Louis, Mo. - The No. 9 Lewis University men's lacrosse team scored a season-best 11 first quarter goals en route to defeating No. 14 Saint Leo, 20-14, Monday morning on the campus of Maryville University.
Back in the win column, the Flyers improved to 7-2 while the Lions dipped to 4-3.
IMPACT PLAYERS
Paul Ruskoski (Tulsa, Oklahoma/Bishop Kelley HS) led the Flyers goal barrage with five goals while
Carter Korzenski (Orchard Park, N.Y./Limestone) and
Camden Rappis (Delafield, Wisconsin/Kettle Moraine HS) chipped in four goals each.
Dylan Kendrick (Chanhassen, Minnesota/Chanhassen HS) picked up six ground balls while
Zach Ottolino (Lockport, Illinois/Lockport Township HS) caused a team-best three turnovers. In net,
Caden Donahue (Hugo, Minnesota/Mahtomedi HS) played the full 60 and made 10 saves.
Greg Palmer paced Saint Leo with four goals while Drew Wheeler could not make one save and was charged with the loss in 15 minutes of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Flyers offense could not be stopped to begin the contest as they tallied eight consecutive goals before Saint Leo found the back of the net for the first time all contest at the 4:05 mark. Lewis added in three more goals before the frame ended, with Rappis notching two goals of his own, to command an 11-2 lead after 15 minutes.
The Flyers began the second quarter still rolling as
Josh Schelfe (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) found the twine at the 12:14 mark to push the Lewis lead to 12-4. The two sides traded goals throughout the frame, but two Lewis goals courtesy of Ruskoski and Korzenski with under one minute before halftime sent Lewis into the break with a 15-6 edge.
Out of the halftime break, the Flyers again dominated Saint Leo as they notched three of the first four goals of the new frame to expand their lead to a game-high 11, 18-7, with 3:50 to play. During the third quarter attack,
Camden Rappis (Delafield, Wisconsin/Kettle Moraine HS), Korzenski and Ruskoski each tallied a goal.
The Lions closed the contest scoring five of the final seven goals of the game, but their early defecit was too much to overcome as they fell, 20-14.

- Lewis is now 1-0 against Saint Leo
- The Flyers have scored 20-or-more goals in three of their last four games.
- Ottolino's three caused turnovers are a season-high
- Donahue made 10-or-more saves for the fifth time this season and second consecutive game
