MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Lewis University softball team won both of its games Monday (March 16), defeating Ohio Dominican 3-2 and Northern State 13-3. The Flyers moved to 5-9 on the season with the wins.
GAME 1: Lewis 3, Ohio Dominican 2
The Panthers scored first with a double to center field by Saadie Maysonet to take a 1-0 lead. An
Anna Frafjord (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton High School) single in the third, which scored
Katie Jensen (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South), tied the game at 1-1.
Kristen Graham (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs High School) gave the Flyers a 3-1 lead in the fifth when an error on a sacrifice bunt by the first baseman scored
Nicole Magdziasz (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic High School). Kendra Sterling had a RBI single for the Panthers in the sixth to make it 3-2.
However, with two on and one out, the Panthers could not get the tying run across the plate as a line out to center and a pop out to short ended the inning. Ohio Dominican (7-10) went three up, three down in the seventh to end the game.
Avery Flynn (Fruitport, Mich./Spring Lake) (1-1) got the win for the flyers, allowing 10 hits and two earned runs over seven innings. Alyvia Lawrentz (3-6) suffered the loss, allowing five hits and three runs, one earned, while striking out four over five innings. Magdziasz and Frafjord each had two hits for the Flyers.
GAME 2: Lewis 13, Northern State 3
The Flyers jumped out to an early lead with four first inning runs. Frafjord started the scoring with a three-run home run and
Ariana Trausch (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove High School) followed a couple batters later with a triple to score the fourth run.
Northern State (8-8) got two runs back in the bottom of the second inning, but the Flyers responded with five runs in the top of the third. Trausch was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring a run.
Erica Hoffman (Hebron, Ind./Boone Grove High School) doubled, scoring two runs, and a Magdziasz single scored two more runs as the Flyers took a commanding 9-2 lead.
Lewis would put the game away in the fifth inning as a
Morgan Spodarek (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) grand slam put the Flyers up 13-2. A passed ball scored a run for the Wolves in the bottom of the fifth, but the game would end on the run rule.
Chloe Gust (2-2) picked up the win, allowing five hits and three unearned runs in five innings. Dessa Bryant (1-2) took the loss, allowing three hits and four earned runs in 0.1 inning pitched. Magdziasz went 3-for-4 with two RBI, giving her five hits on the day. Frafjord (3 runs scored, 3 RBI) and Spodarek (2 runs scored, 4 RBI) each went 2-for-3.
