Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University softball team won one game and lost the other game of their doubleheader against William Jewell College 17-0 and 2-14 respectively this past Sunday afternoon at Lewis Softball Field.
Â
GAME ONE
The Flyers started things off with a seven-run first inning, immediately establishing their dominance in the first game of the day. After a walk by
Kristen Graham (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs High School),
Katie Jensen (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) and
Nicole Magdziasz (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic High School) advanced to second and third base respectively. After a hit by
Anna Frafjord (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton High School) went down center field, Jensen and Magdziasz ran to home plate to get the first two runs of the Flyers' seven. Graham and Frafjord followed with two more runs, putting the flyers up four to nothing on the scoreboard. After Hoffman reached second base on a hit that went into center field,
Jolee Strohmeyer (Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque Senior) advanced to third base while Chloe Konhorst added one more run for the Flyers. Hoffman and Strohmeyer would add two more runs to close out the Flyers' highest scoring inning.Â
Â
The Flyers held William Jewell to a no run and only one hit in the second inning, with one player left on base. Although Lewis didn't get as many runs during the bottom of the second,
Anna Frafjord (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton High School) sent a ball over the outfield fence for a home run, adding to the Flyers' total runs.
Â
Strohmeyer scored the Flyers' first run in the bottom of the third inning. After stealing third base, Hoffman scored a run on an error by the shortstop, making it her second run of the day. Magdziasz, Jensen and Tegan Berkshire added the last three runs for the Flyers in the third inning, bringing the score to a dominant 13-0.
Â
In another action packed inning, the Flyer scored four more runs while they held the visitors to zero runs total. Runs by Jensen,
Ava Reed (Lemont, Ill./Lemont High School), and Berhire, closed out the scoring for the Flyers, bringing the final score to a 17-0 victory.
Â
GAME TWO
Although the Flyers came off a dominant 17-0 win in the first game, the visitors turned things around and won, 14-2.
Â
The game started off with a home run by William Jewell's Mikayla Chairez, followed by runs from Lexi Lopez and Amanda Chung. A second home run, this time by Shayenne Kelch, and runs by Emma Jane Ogle and Tori Woodard, caught the Flyers by surprise as they were down 0-6 through the end of the top of the first inning.
Â
It would be those same players that scored all the runs for the hosts during the remaining innings. Two runs came during the second inning, four runs during the third, and the last two runs came during the fourth inning. The two runs during the fourth were Chairez's second home run of the game and a homerun by Chung, making it her first home run of the day and her fourth run total. Chairez and Chung made up for eight of the visitors' 14 runs, with four runs each.
The Flyers didn't see any action on the scoreboard until the bottom of the inning, when a hit by Strohmeyer that went down right field allowed Konhorst to run to home plate. After Magdziasz reached first base on an error by third baseman, Strohmeyer scored the Flyers' second and final run of the game.
