Kansas City, Mo. - The Lewis University softball team won their doubleheader on the road today against Rockhurst University, winning by final scores of 2-1 and 9-4
GAME ONE
The Flyers managed to narrowly pull out the victory in a 2-1 thriller that didn't see any runs until the fifth inning. Lewis' Jolee Strohmeyer (Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque Senior) pitching was a big reason in holding the hosts to only one run the entire game. With 100 pitches thrown, four strikeouts and zero walks given, Strohmeyer helped close out the victory for the Flyers at the bottom of the seventh inning.
After Morgan Spodarek (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) stole third base during the top of the fifth, Arianna Trausch reached first base on a fielder's choice after a bunt. This allowed Spodarek to cross home plate and open the scoring. Rockhurst's Jazmyne Moreno scored on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the frame, ending the fifth inning tied at one run each.
With the bases loaded after a scoreless sixth inning, a Teagan Barkshire hit that went down right field allowed her to get to first base and drive in Chloe Konhorst, giving them the lead of the game for the second time. In the bottom half of the frame with two outs, a hit by the host's Trinity Darst didn't get far, as it went up right field, allowing Komhorst to catch it, making it the final out of the game to secure the 2-1 victory.
GAME TWO
In an action packed game two that saw each team total 10-or-more hits, Nicole Magdziasz (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic High School) did everything she could to secure the Flyers' first run, starting with a hit that allowed her to reach first base. Katie Jensen's (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) sacrifice fly gave Magdziasz enough ground to cover to safely reach second base. While Anna Frafjord (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton High School) ran to second base after her hit went down right center field, Magdziasz took the opportunity to reach home plate and open the score for the Flyers. Arianna Trausch scored the Flyers' only run in the second inning, giving them a two run lead over the hosts.
Lewis' most active inning came at the top of the third, as home runs by Spodarek and Trausch, her second run of the game, and runs by Chloe Konhorst and Kristen Graham (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs High School) added to the Flyers lead.
Although the Flyers had a comfortable 6-1 lead, Rockhurst got back in the game with three additional runs at the bottom of the fifth, putting the pressure on the Flyers. With the bases loaded, Anna Frafjord (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton High School) reached second base after her hit went down right center field, allowing Graham, Magdziasz, and Berkshire to cross home plate, increasing the Flyers' lead to 9-4. Lewis would go on to close out the game at the bottom of the seventh, which marked their second win of the day against Rockhurst.
With their two wins today, the Flyers' record moves to 15-11.
