FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 16 Lewis University men's volleyball team fell to No. 20 Purdue Fort Wayne 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-20) Saturday in the final MIVA match of the regular season. The Flyers finish the regular season 16-13 overall, 8-8 in the MIVA, while the Mastodons finish 12-11 overall, 7-9 in the MIVA.
IMPACT PLAYERS
Daniel Haber (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach) and
Frederick Krueger-Beer (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) had seven kills each for the Flyers.
Cameron Hoying (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) added two service aces, 10 assists and six digs.
Cole Sweitzer (Middleton, Wis./Middleton HS) and
Shawn Baggs Jr. (Gilbert, Ariz./Casteel HS) had five blocks each, while
Diego Estrada (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Adianez) dished out 16 assists. Carlo Huisden and Owen Banner had 14 kills each to lead Purdue Fort Wayne, while Hunter Hopkins had 38 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lewis jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the first set before three straight points from the Mastodons to move ahead 6-5. The Flyers regained a two-point lead, but the Mastodons once again came back to take the lead.
With the game tied at 18-18, the Mastodons scored three straight points to take a 21-18 lead. Lewis could get no closer than two points the rest of the set and a service error at 24-22 ended the set.
Purdue Fort Wayne scored the first three points of the second set and built a 9-3 lead before the Flyers scored seven of the next eight points to tie the set at 10-10. The Mastodons regained three-point advantages at 16-13 and 21-18, but the Flyers again came back to tie the score at 17-17 and 21-21.
A Haber kill tied the match once again at 23-23, but back-to-back kills for Purdue Fort Wayne ended the set.
The Mastodons built a 9-4 lead in the third set but the Flyers battled back to cut the deficit to two points at 11-9. It was a two-pin match at 17-15 when PFW scored three straight points to make it 21-15. The Flyers could get no closer than four points the rest of the way as the Mastodons finished off the match.
MATCH NOTES
- Lewis had a 12-4 block edge on Purdue Fort Wayne
- Estrada hit double digit assists for the 17th straight game and for the 28th time in 29 matches this year.
- The Mastodons had a 43-28 edge in attack kills.

Lewis enters MIVA Tournament play as the No. 6 seed and will travel to Lindenwood to face the No. 3 seed Lions Saturday, April 18.
