Romeoville, Ill. - Missouri S&T picked up a pair of close road wins as they defeated the Lewis University softball team 3-2 in game one and 11-8 in game two Sunday afternoon at Lewis Softball Field.
GAME ONE
The Miners struck first in the top of the third as Morgan Williams homered over the center field wall to bring home Trista Grobe and make it a 2-0 contest.
The visitors added to their lead in the top of the sixth as AJ Agers drove home Taylor Nelson for their Miners third run of the day.
Lewis nearly tied the game in the bottom half of the stanza as
Nicole Magdziasz (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic High School) doubled into the outfield, bringing home
Jozlynn Pacheco (/Argo Community) and
Teagan Berkshire (/Lincoln-Way Central) to make it a 3-2 contest.
Despite the Flyers getting multiple runners into scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, Missouri S&T kept Lewis at bay and held on to win, 3-2.
AJ Agers earned the win in the circle for S&T while Mia Miller earned the save.
Jolee Strohmeyer (Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque Senior) was charged with the loss.
GAME TWO
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Lewis claimed its first lead of the afternoon as
Morgan Spodarek (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) secured her fifth triple of the year to bring in a pair of runs and push the red and white ahead, 2-1.
The Flyers added to their lead in the bottom half of the frame as Magdziasz singled into right field for her first RBI of the second game to make it 3-1.
Missouri S&T flipped the script in the top of the third as a Molly Fitzgerald single that brought in two runs tied the game 3-3. After the Fitzgerald single, the Miners tallied eight unanswered runs over the next two frames to take their largest lead of the afternoon, 11-3, heading into the fifth inning.
The Flyers attempted to comeback in the bottom of the fifth as Spodarek sent a ball into the outfield to bring home
Kristen Graham (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs High School) and make it 11-4. A sacrifice fly from
Anna Frafjord (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton High School) the next at-bat saw
Chloe Kohnhorst (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) cross home plate, cutting the defect to six, 11-5.
RBI from Hoffman, Magdziasz and
Katie Jensen (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) helped chip away at the defecit with Lewis making it a three run contest, 11-8, heading to the top of the sixth.
Despite late scoring chances for the Flyers, the visitors kept Lewis at bay to seal the 11-8 win.
Agers earned the game two win while
Avery Flynn (Fruitport, Mich./Spring Lake) was charged with the loss.
