Women's Lacrosse Stymied by No. 9 Maryville

St. Louis, Mo. - No. 9 Maryville led wire-to-wire as they defeated the Lewis University women's lacrosse team, 25-4, Sunday afternoon at the Maryville Athletic Complex. 

The Saints improved to 9-3 (2-1 GLVC) while Lewis moved to 6-6 (0-3 GLVC).

IMPACT PLAYERS
Helen Bae and Paige Murphy led the way with five goals each with Bae also tallying a game-high eight points. On the defensive side of the ball, Bae caused five turnovers while Murphy won 14 draw controls. Gianna Guzek earned the win in net, playing 30 minutes. 

Ryan Paterson (Pitt Meadows, BC, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School) led Lewis with two points while Devyn Hartley (Coquitlam, BC, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) snagged two ground balls. Ryan Fuhrer (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial High School) caused two turnovers for the Flyers as well. In net, Sophia Fountain (Berkeley, Ill./Montini Catholic High School) made 16 saves in the loss. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints struck first as they rattled off three goals in the opening five minutes of play. The hosts offense continued to hum as they added six more goals before Victoria Zielinski (Elgin, Ill./Central High School) tallied her first of the afternoon at the 9:05 mark of the second quarter to get Lewis on the board. The Flyers notched two more goals before the half ended with Paterson and Sam Sandefur (Burlington, Ky./Randall K. Cooper High School) each finding the twine. Maryville tallied one more goal with less than a minute left to enter the locker room with a 13-3 lead. 

The hosts kept Lewis at bay for most of the second half to secure the 25-4 win. Georgia Kodytek (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake South) scored on the woman-up situation at the 12:45 mark of the fourth quarter to account for the Flyers fourth goal of the day. 

GAME NOTES
  • Today marked the eighth all-time meeting between both schools
  • Paterson secured two-or-more points for the sixth time this season
  • Fuhrer's two caused turnovers are a season-high
