St. Louis, Mo. - The Lewis University baseball team won on the road today against Maryville University 19-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Flyers opened the score at the top of the second inning. Although they were already at two outs, Tyler Phommachanhom singled through the left field to keep the inning alive.
Kyle Peterson (Orland Park, Ill/Carl Sandburg) doubled to right center field, which gave Phommachanhom the opportunity to score the Flyers' first run. Although Peterson advanced to third on another wild pitch,
Cole Clemens (Marco Island, Flo.) fouled out, ending Lewis' side of the inning.
The next inning was the highest scoring inning from either team, as the Flyers put up six runs to gain a 7-0 lead over Maryville.
Jimmy Spellman (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame College of Prep) advanced to first base while Constantine Coins scored the Flyers' first run of the third inning. Spellman got his run after
Jayden Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill.) hit a home run to left center field. Peterson, Phommachanhom and
John Henry Russell (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) scored Lewis' next three runs, closing a six run and five hit inning.
Spellman scored his second run of the game at the top of the fourth while
Alex Chaltin (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) and
Chris Daugherty (Chicago, Ill/Brother Rice) scored their first. The three runs put the Flyers up 10-0. The hosts responded after a home run by Tim Leark at the bottom of the fourth opened the score for Maryville. The Flyers went scoreless in the fifth while Justin Gorki scored Maryville's second run. Lewis was quick to bounce back as they added to more runs at the top of the sixth with a home run by Chaltin, who got his second run of the game and a second run by Russell, making the score a comfortable 12-2 lead.
What followed next was the highest combined scoring inning of the game, with four runs from the Flyers and five runs from Maryville during the seventh inning. For the Flyers, Gonzalez reached first on a fielder's choice while Spellman added another run to his total. Gonzalez would go on to score a run after
Alex Chaltin (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) doubled to left field, giving him enough time to reach home plate. Chaltin, who had advanced to third, scored a run after Phommachanhom doubled down the left field line. Andrew Gould, Tim leark, Greyson Rathgeb, Steven Schneider and Aaris Stolte scored Maryville's five runs.
The Flyers added three final runs at the top of the eighth after a home run by Gonzalez while Coins and Clemens were at second and third base, respectively. The game was called after eight innings, with a final score of 19-7.

The Lewis University baseball team will return home to Brennan Field this upcoming Tuesday (April 14) to face Trinity Christian College, with start time set for 3:00 p.m. CT.
