Women's Lacrosse Ends Home Slate with Senior Day Victory Over William Jewell

Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University women's lacrosse team outscored William Jewell, 4-1, in the fourth quarter to comeback and win, 9-7, Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium on Senior Day.

With the win, the Flyers evened their record at 7-7 (1-4 GLVC) while the Cardinals dipped to 1-11 (0-5 GLVC).

IMPACT PLAYERS
Eliana Cappellini (Burnaby, BC, Canada/Burnaby North Secondary School) and Ryan Paterson (Pitt Meadows, BC, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School) led Lewis with three goals each while Jade McKinnon (Coquitlam, BC, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) paced the Flyers with a game-high six points. Charlie Dayman (Langley, BC, Canada/D W Poppy Secondary School) paced the red and white defense with three ground balls and three caused turnovers while in net, Sophia Fountain (Berkeley, Ill./Montini Catholic High School) made nine saves in the win.

Trinkel Kuepper paced William Jewell with three goals while Sara Polovina snagged three ground balls. Claire Eastwood made eight saves in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Flyers struck first as Daniella Winterlik (Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada/Terry Fox) rifled a ball into the back of the net to open the scoring at the 9:53 mark. Lewis doubled its lead less than two minutes later as McKinnon collected a ball from Amelia Procyk (Coquitlam, BC, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) and slotted it into the back of the net for the Flyers second goal of the afternoon. Still, William Jewell flipped the script as they tallied the final three goals of the half to end the first quarter with a 3-2 edge.

The second quarter was a defensive standstill with both goalies making two saves and neither side finding the back of the net, sending the Cardinals into halftime with their 3-2 lead in tact.

Trinkel opened the scoring the second half with her second of the contest to make it a 5-3 William Jewell lead. Still, the Flyers turned the tables as Paterson found the back of the net on the woman-up situation to spurn a 3-1 spurt that tied the contest, 5-5. However, a late goal from the visitors sent William Jewell into the fourth with a slim 6-5 lead.

After trading the first two goals of the final stanza, the Flyers took the lead for good as back-to-back goals from McKinnon and Paterson gave Lewis the lead for good, 8-7, with 9:59 to play. The Flyers added an insurance goal from Paterson at the 2:40 mark to seal the 9-7 Senior Day win.
