Flyers Fall to UMSL in Doubleheader Battle

Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University softball team dropped a doubleheader to the University of Missouri-St. Louis Sunday afternoon in Romeoville.

GAME 1 RECAP
Lewis got off to a strong start in the top of the first inning when Katie Jensen (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) launched a solo home run to left center, giving the Flyers an early 1-0 lead.

UMSL responded in the bottom of the second with a three-run homer from Gracie Philpot to take a 3-1 advantage. Lewis answered in the third, as Kristen Graham (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs High School) doubled to right center to bring home Nicole Magdziasz (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic High School) and cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Tritons broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning with a six-run outburst, highlighted by a three-RBI double from May Pasqualini and multiple run-scoring hits to extend the lead to 9-2.

UMSL added four more runs in the fourth inning to push the score to 13-2. Lewis was unable to respond offensively the rest of the way, as UMSL secured the run-rule victory.

GAME 2 RECAP
Lewis threatened early in game two, collecting multiple hits in the first inning, but was unable to push a run across.
UMSL struck first in the bottom of the first and added three more runs in the second inning, using timely hitting to build a 4-0 lead.

The Tritons continued to add on with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, extending their advantage to 7-0.
Lewis broke through in the sixth inning when Tori Richardson (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) delivered an RBI single down the right field line, scoring Katie Jensen (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) to make it 7-1.

In the seventh inning Katie Jensen (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South), Morgan Spodarek (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township), and Tori Richardson (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) each recorded RBI hits to bring Lewis within three at 7-4, but the comeback fell short as UMSL held on for the win.
