El Mahalla El Kubra, Egypt – Egyptian Premier League club Ghazl El Mahalla SC recently announced the signing of Lewis University men's soccer alumnus Jimmy Mwanga. The former Flyers standout joins the club after a stint with China League One side Qingdao Red Lions.
Mwanga has carved out a professional career that has seen him play for clubs in Austria, Cyprus, China and the United States. This past year in China, Mwanga became the first man from Ireland to play for the Qingdao Red Lions. With the Red Lions, he appeared in 16 total matches across League One and the Chinese FA Cup where he tallied two total goals.
Founded in 1936, Ghazl El Mahalla SC won their sole league title in 1973 and reached the final of the African Champions League the following year. The squad returned to the Egyptian Premier League in 2020 and have not been relegated since.
Mwanga played for the Lewis men's soccer program from 2019-2021 after transferring from Eastern Florida State College. During his three seasons at Lewis, Mwanga played in 53 matches with 47 starts for the Flyers.
The forward from Dublin, Ireland, recorded 21 total goals and picked up 10 assists during his tenure at Lewis. Mwanga was awarded D2CCA All-Midwest Region Second Team, United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region First Team and All-GLVC First Team accolades during his fifth year at Lewis.
In his final season with the red and white, Mwanga led the Flyers to a 12-5-3 record and their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2013. Lewis defeated Davenport in the first round, 2-0, before falling to Lake Erie the following round.
