Romeoville, Ill. – Lewis University's men's soccer team opened its 2026 campaign Thursday evening against Purdue Northwest, falling to the Lions, 1-0.
IMPACT PLAYERS
Lance Somerfield (Orland Park, Ill./Eastern Illinois) led the Flyers in shots with a total of five. Goalkeeper
Matija Blazic (Obrenovac Beograd, Serbia/Gimnazija u Obrenovcu) played the full 90 minutes and notched one save during the game.
As for the Lions, Landon Potts and Gianluca Franco led with two shots each. Brandon Young scored the only goal of the game and goalkeeper Estefano Alvear had a total of six saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite multiple scoring chances from both teams, neither side found the back of the net, sending both squads into the locker room tied at zero.
The only goal of the game came in the 71st minute as Purdue Northwest's Brandon Young slipped past the Lewis defense and put the ball in the back of the net.
Lewis attempted to level the score with multiple scoring chances late in the game, but the Lions kept the Flyers at bay to secure the 1-0 win.
GAME NOTES
- Lewis had a total of 13 shots compared to just six for the Lions.
- Somerfield and Gerome Gohlke (Hamburg, Germany/Oklahoma Christian) totaled 90 minutes during the game
- Lewis got two yellow cards compared to Purdue Northwest who had four given to players and two given to coaches.
