The purple women's 100 backstroke is in honor of former Lewis swimmer Shannon Gardner. Shannon tragically died January 27, 2001 due to injuries sustained in a car accident. She swam a record 1:01.34 in the 100 backstroke on February 19, 2000; a mark that stood until December 6, 2003 when Leigh Dodd lowered the record to 59.94.
