Lynn Plett

  • Title
    Head Coach (5th season)
E-mail coach Plett Lynn Plett was named head coach of the Flyers on Jan. 23, 2003, after serving as the team's acting head coach since October 2002. Plett is the 10th coach in program history. In four seasons at Lewis, Plett has re-established the Flyers as one of the top teams in the Great Lakes region and Great Lakes Valley Conference. In 2005-06, Plett guided the Flyers to a third straight winning season (19-11, 14-5 GLVC), a second-place finish in the conference's East Division and a second straight NCAA tournament appearance. He also led the Flyers to their first-ever NCAA tournament win, an 89-66 decision over Lake Superior State on March 10. Plett's 2005-06 starting lineup was the first in school history to feature three 1,000-point scorers in Mary Moskal, Darcee Schmidt and Shante Glenn. Moskal was named GLVC Player of the Year and all-region first team. Schmidt earned all-region and all-conference second-team recognition, and Glenn appeared on the all-conference second team for the first time in her four-year career. Plett led Lewis to a 19-11 overall record and a 14-5 conference mark in the 2004-05 season, improving from 16-12 (13-7 GLVC) in the 2003-04 season. The 2004-05 team made the program's first NCAA tournament appearance in seven years. Plett has posted a 63-52 overall mark and a 47-32 GLVC ledger with the Flyers. Under his leadership, the Flyers have matched or improved their win totals and conference standing each season. The staple in coach Plett's on-court system is an up-tempo style that places an emphasis on player freedom. His system relies on players who know their strengths and limitations and utilize that knowledge for the betterment of the team. Before coming to Lewis in 2002 as an assistant coach, Plett served eight seasons as head women's basketball coach at Saint Joseph's (Ind.), posting a 94-122 record with the Pumas. Plett made an immediate impact by guiding the Pumas to the 1994-95 Great Lakes Valley Conference co-championship and an NCAA Division II tournament bid in his first season. He was named GLVC Coach of the Year for those accomplishments. Plett also was director of athletics the first five years of his tenure at the Rensselaer, Ind., school. Prior to his stint at Saint Joseph's, Plett served five years as head men's basketball coach and assistant athletics director at Huntington (Ind.) College, and three years as head men's basketball coach and athletics director at Marymount (Kan.) College. He was voted NAIA District 10 Coach of the Year in 1988 following his second season at Marymount. Plett earned bachelor's degrees in humanities (Biblical studies emphasis) and physical education at Tabor (Kan.) College. He and wife Brenda have a son, Matt, and a daughter, Stacy.
