E-mail coach Lockyer
Now in her 32nd season as a head coach, Karen K. Lockyer continues to achieve excellence and maintain a lofty standard for the Lewis women's volleyball program.
As Lewis University's head women's volleyball coach, Lockyer brought a 726-423-7 record into the 2006 season. She has had 24 winning seasons in her 31-year career and led the team to the NCAA Division II Championship match in 1981.
More recently, she guided the squad to a 25-5 record in 2002 when the Flyers finished atop the Great Lakes Valley Conference regular-season standings for the first time since 1992 and earned a trip to the NCAA Championship tournament for a second time in three years. The 2002 team produced the best winning percentage in school history, had five players claim All-GLVC honors and earned Lockyer her fourth GLVC Coach of the Year Award.
On September 29, 2004, Lockyer became just the sixth coach in NCAA Division II history to reach 700 career victories when the Flyers downed Wisconsin-Parkside. She became a member of the 600-victory club when her Flyers defeated Truman State on September 4, 1999. She coached her 1,000th intercollegiate match on September 29, 2001, as Lewis topped Indianapolis.
Lockyer ranks third in victories among active NCAA Division II coaches; including all three NCAA divisions, she ranks 10th in wins among active coaches. Her career record includes a 256-77-7 ledger during Lewis' years in the AIAW, making her the third-winningest coach in AIAW history.
Lockyer took over a year-old Lewis program in 1975 and made an immediate impact, as the Flyers produced a 12-4 record following a 2-10 mark in 1974. It was the first of 24 winning campaigns for Lewis under Lockyer's guidance.
The 1978 Flyers finished sixth at the AIAW national tournament in the first of 10 postseason appearances during Lockyer's tenure - six as an NCAA Division II member and four as an AIAW member. Lewis placed third in the AIAW in 1979, and the 1981 Flyers were second in the nation in NCAA Division II and sixth in the AIAW after posting a 51-11-2 record.
Following the 1981 NCAA Championship appearance, Lewis qualified for the national tournament three more times during that decade - 1982, 1988 and 1989. Lockyer guided her program back into the national spotlight in 2000, as the Flyers made their first NCAA appearance in 11 years.
Lockyer coached Lewis to the Great Lakes Valley Conference title in 1982, 1983, 1989 and 1992, and to the GLVC runner-up spot in 1984, 1987 and 1988. She has received the Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year award and is a four-time GLVC Coach of the Year.
Lockyer is chairperson of Lewis' Sport and Exercise Science Department, holding the rank of professor, and she has served as Lewis Athletics Senior Woman Administrator. She is a member of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee and has served on the Division II Regional Ranking/Selection Committee, the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Region Selection Committee and the Great Lakes Region Advisory Committee.
Lockyer received a bachelor of science degree in physical
education in 1973, a master of science degree in health education in 1978 and a master of education degree in administration in 1988, all from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
