ALLENDALE, Mich. – Lewis men's swimming opened the 2011-12 campaign on Friday evening at Grand Valley State by dropping a 186-49 decision.
“With so many freshmen it was good to get those first meet jitters out of the way and get their first meet under their belts,” head coach
Roger Karns said. “We had some nice swims and we learned a few things we need to work on. I think both the men and women are dedicated to improving from here.”
Junior
Brandon Drogemuller (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:50.85. He bested the next finisher by 16 seconds. Drogemuller took second in the 500 freestyle by touching the wall in 4:53.67.
Sophomore
Derick Carlson (Norridge, Ill./St. Patrick) (Norridge, Ill./St. Patrick) won the 200 freestyle by .02 of a second. He finished with a time of 1:46.33
“Derick snuck up on someone like I knew he would,” Karns said.
Carlson also took third in the 100 freestyle (49.29). Freshman
Brett Busch (East Moline, Ill./United Township) (East Moline, Ill./United Township) was third in the 50 freestyle (22.80). Freshman
Tyson Polack (Canby, Ore./Canby) (Canby, Ore./Canby) was third in the 400 IM by finishing in 4:20.76.
While the Lewis women host Hillsdale on Saturday, the men get to simply cheer on their teammates as Hillsdale doesn't sponsor men's swimming. The Lewis men are next in action on Oct. 29 against William Jewell in a home meet for the Flyers.
