ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Redshirt freshman Michael Adams (Webster Groves, Mo./St. Louis University High School) (Webster Groves, Mo./St. Louis University High School) recorded a career-high 14 kills in No. 12 Lewis men's volleyball's 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 16-25, 25-19) victory over NJIT on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena.
Adams finished a dig short of a double-double with nine digs, two aces and four blocks (one solo). He helped Lewis out-block the Highlanders 12.0 to 6.0.
“We blocked well and did a good job of slowing them down,” head coach Dan Friend said.
Freshman middle hitter Yiwei Zhou (Nanjing, China/Nanjing No. 1) (Nanjing, China/Nanjing No. 1) added nine kills and seven blocks (one solo).
“Mike and Yiwei put together some nice stat lines tonight,” Friend said. “Both guys did a nice job and put us in position to win.”
Seniors Casey Bennett (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union/Long Beach City College) and Brian Schmidt (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park/River Forest) (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park/River Forest) each added 10 kills.
Lewis pulled away in the second set with a five point run late in the frame. NJIT took the third set to make the match 2-1. The Flyers put it away in the fourth. The difference came late in the frame, with Lewis scoring eight of the final 11 points in the match after the score was tied 17.
NJIT falls to 5-14. Lewis improves to 14-6. The Flyers host George Mason on Saturday at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear powder blue in recognition of Prostate Cancer Awareness. One dollar from every ticket sold will be donated to ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer.
