Sophomore Brian Norwood

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis opened the Great Lakes Valley Conference portion of their schedule on a high note by sweeping a doubleheader from UIS on Saturday afternoon. Lewis won the first game 24-2 and the second 7-4.

The Flyers ran away with game one thanks to six runs in the third, six in the fourth, 11 in the fifth and one in the eighth.

Junior Andrew Brauer (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini/College of DuPage) and freshman Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) each drove in four runs for Lewis. They were two of 11 Flyers to record an RBI. Every Flyer starter recorded a hit. Brauer and senior Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport) (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport) each had four hits.

Senior Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist/South Suburban CC) improved his record to 2-0 by going eight innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits. He struck out five UIS batters.

“Our hitters had a good approach all game,” head coach Tim McDonough said. “I thought Tyler got better as the game went on even though we put some big innings on the board.”

Lewis' bats stayed hot in game two, scoring five runs in the first inning. Sophomore Ian O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had a two-out two RBI single in the frame. Albano knocked in two more runs in the game, including one on a solo home run in the third.

Junior Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) started and earned the win (3-1). He allowed three runs (one earned) on nine hits over 5.0 innings. Sophomore Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) (McLean, Ill./Olympia) earned his third save of the season. He left the bases loaded in the sixth and then pitched a 1-2-3 seventh.

“Our effort and energy in game two wasn't what it was in game one,” McDonough said. “That can come back to bite you and hopefully we can learn from that and comeback tomorrow to play 16 good innings.”

UIS falls to 2-9 (0-2 GLVC). Lewis improves to 9-3 (2-0 GLVC). The Flyers host Quincy on Sunday in a doubleheader starting at noon.
