Flyers Downed By George Mason, 3-0

Three Flyers reach double digits in kills

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Craig Boller hit a team-best .643 and was one of three Lewis Flyers to reach double digits in kills, but Shawn Powell's 28 kills powered George Mason University to a 3-0 match win (34-32, 30-22, 30-28), Saturday night at Neil Carey Arena.

Powell, who had nearly half of the Patriots' 60 kills, hit .794 for the match and also notched two aces, a match-high six digs and three blocks.

Drew Pickering led the Flyers with 17 kills, while Boller and Mykolai Zerebeckyj each tallied 10. Pickering also registered a team-best five digs.

With the Flyers up 31-30 in the first game, Powell nailed back-to-back kills to give the Patriots a 32-31 edge. David Kelnhofer re-tied the score with a kill for the Flyers, but a Matt Steinfurth point put the Patriots back out in front, and Powell ended it with another slam.

The Flyers were within two points of the Patriots (18-16) in game two before Powell sparked an 8-3 rally with two kills, a solo block and an ace.

The score was tied 25 all in the third and final set, but consecutive kills from Powell put the Patriots ahead for good. Powell also claimed the match-winning kill.

Hudson Bates also recorded double digits kills for the Patriots, notching 13 with four digs.

The Patriots out-hit the Flyers .560 to .385 for the match, and they held a 12-6 advantage in blocks.

The Flyers look for a return to the win column against Clarke, Thursday at 7 pm.
