No. 14 Southern Indiana Sweeps Lewis Baseball

Flyers nearly rally from nine-run deficit in game one

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Defending national champion No. 14 Southern Indiana swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader from Lewis Sunday afternoon at Brennan Field by scores of 11-10 and 20-4.

Lewis trailed 11-2 entering the seventh inning of game one when the bats came alive. Lewis scored five times in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 11-7. The big hit in the inning was a three-run home run by senior Miguel Amesquita (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice) (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice/Triton).

Freshman Tom Durkin (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to keep the deficit at four. In the bottom of the ninth Lewis loaded the bases with no outs and was able to plate three to make it an 11-10 game. Senior Andrew Brauer (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini/College of DuPage) had the final chance to tie it up but struck out to end the game with runners on first and second.

Freshman Tom Helwich (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) started for Lewis and took the loss, dropping his record to 3-2.


The second game was all Southern Indiana. The Screaming Eagles scored in every inning, including seven in the first. Southern Indiana's Tyler Choate hit a grand slam in the first inning for one of his four home runs on the day.

The lone bright spot for Lewis in game two was a grand slam by junior Mike Bolling (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep) (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep/Triton) in the fourth inning. Bolling has now reached base safely in 23 consecutive games.

Junior Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) took the loss to drop his record to 6-2.

“Credit USI, they played better than us today,” head coach Tim McDonough said. “We fought back in game one but we were playing from behind all day.”

Southern Indiana improves to 23-9 (15-3 GLVC). Lewis falls to 17-10 (10-6 GLVC). Lewis and Southern Indiana will play again on Monday in a makeup doubleheader from Saturday. The contests will start at noon.
