ROMEOVILLE, Ill.
– Lewis baseball split a doubleheader with No. 25 Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon at Brennan Field. Lewis rallied in the late innings of game one for a 7-6 victory before falling 7-5 in the nightcap.

In game one, the Flyers trailed 4-1 entering the fifth inning of the seven inning contest when Lewis exploded for five runs. With a run already in and runners on first and third, senior
Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill. / Lockport) had the big hit to tie the game. He tripled to right center, directly into the corner where the larger right field wall meets the shorter wall at Brennan Field. He would then score on an RBI single by senior Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./ Marist/South Suburban CC) to give Lewis a 5-4 advantage. The Flyers' sixth run came in on a double by senior Miguel Amesquita (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice) (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice/Triton) to left center field.

UIndy tied it up in the top of the sixth with two runs, but it could have been worse. Sophomore
Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) entered the game with the bases loaded and one out. He surrendered a double to tie the score, but earned a ground out and a pop out from the next two batters to keep the game tied at five.

The Flyers took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth. Junior
Mike Bolling (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep/Triton) doubled after the Greyhounds' leftfielder tried to make a diving play on a sinking line drive. A Forkin ground ball moved him to third. With two outs and two strikes, senior Andrew Brauer (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini/College of Dupage) singled to center to score Bolling and put Lewis up.

Frahm walked UIndy's first batter in the seventh, but he was thrown trying to advance to third base on a bouncer hit to the shortstop Forkin. The batter who got on base due to the fielder's choice eventually made it to third with two outs, only to have Frahm leave him there by getting the final Greyhounds batter to ground out.

Forkin finished with three RBI in the game. Bolling had three hits and scored twice. Senior
Mike Vucsko (Evergreen Park, Ill./Marist) scored on both of his singles.

Frahm earned the victory to move his mark to 1-0.

Game two started great for the Flyers, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings. Freshman
Kyle Thomas (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) in the first inning. Sophomore Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) and senior Miguel Amesquita (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice/Triton) hit back-to-back home runs to start the second inning.

Following a four-run UIndy third inning that tied the score, Thomas hit his second home run of the day in the fifth to give Lewis a 5-4 advantage. However two UIndy runs in the fifth and one in the eighth made the final 7-5. Newsome started for Lewis. He picked up the loss to drop his record to 2-1. Newsome gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits over 5.1 innings.

Bolling finished with four singles, a walk and a run scored in game two. Thomas added a double and a single to go with his two home runs.

“We talk about winning three of four at home and we did that,” head coach Tim McDonough said. “But when you win the first three and drop the last it feels skewed and it was good to see some disappointment from the guys after the game.”

Over the four-game series Lewis batters hit .331. The Flyers slugged five homeruns while UIndy hit zero.

“We swung the bats well all weekend and put together 32 good innings of baseball this weekend,” McDonough said.

UIndy is now 16-6 (7-5 Great Lakes Valley Conference). The Flyers are 13-8 (6-4 GLVC). Lewis hosts UW-Parkside on Wednesday in a doubleheader starting at noon.
