ROMEOVILLE, Ill.
– Sophomore Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) recorded 19 kills and eight digs in No. 14 men's volleyball's 3-1 (27-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23) loss to IPFW on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena.

IPFW earned set point at 24-21 in the opening frame only to see Lewis rally to tie it at 24. Petty's only ace of the match came for point 24 after an IPFW timeout. IPFW won the set on a pair of kills by Darryl Shank. Shank finished with 18 kills for IPFW.

IPFW led for much of the second frame. Three consecutive Lewis points advanced the Flyers within one at 19-18. However IPFW counted with a 5-1 run to pull away.

Lewis came back to take the third set. The difference was a four-point push by the Flyers to grab a 21-18 advantage. IPFW tied it at 22 before a Petty kill gave Lewis the lead again. Petty also had a kill for point 25.

The fourth set featured 13 ties and four lead changes. IPFW seemed to be pulling away up 23-21 but kills by Petty and junior
Matt Gallik (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) knotted it up at 23. IPFW asked for time and came out of the break with a kill and then a block on match point.

Lewis matched their season-high in blocks of 17.5 that they set in their win on Saturday against Ohio State. However the Flyers hit just .239 to IPFW's .280.

“We struggled to find an offensive rhythm tonight,” head coach Dan Friend said. “Credit IPFW's defense; they played scrappy and kept the ball up.”

Gallik totaled eight kills, six blocks (two solo) and an ace. Fellow middle hitter junior
Aaron Flick (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) added nine kills on a .438 hitting percentage with seven block assists.

“IPFW scored the key points when they need them,” Friend said. “We've struggled this year scoring the key points at key times.”

Seniors
Brian Muesenfechter (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers), Brian Schmidt (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park/River Forest) and Casey Bennett (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union/Long Beach City College) were honored as part of Senior Night festivities.

IPFW improves to 15-9 (5-6 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association). Lewis falls to 17-10 (5-5 MIVA). Lewis travels to Phoenix, Ariz. for matches on Friday and Saturday at Grand Canyon.
