Senior
Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist) (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist/South Suburban CC) took the loss for the Flyers. He allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits in 4.2 innings. He recorded eight strikeouts.
“I think six of their 10 runs were with two outs and anytime a team does that it gives you a boost,” head coach
Tim McDonough said. “Offensively we've struggled lately to put big innings together or string some innings together with runs and you saw that again today.”
Lewis scored their third run of the game in the eighth on a ground rule double by Helwich that scored sophomore
Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) from third.
Lewis scored first in all three of their 2011 GLVC Tournament games but only won one of the contests.
All nine seniors played in the contest.
“After the game I thanked our seniors for their hard work and dedication to this journey,” McDonough said. “To get to where we are from where we started is a testament to their hard work.”
No. 1 seeded Southern Indiana improves to 36-16. No. 5 seeded Lewis ends their season 24-18, their first above .500 record since 2002. The last time Lewis was six games or better above .500 was 2000.
