NEWARK, N.J. – No. 7 Lewis men's volleyball swept NJIT on Friday (Feb. 17) evening 25-22, 25-20, 25-19 in a road non-conference match. The win was Lewis' third straight by way of a sweep. It was also Lewis head coach
Dan Friend's 200th career men's volleyball victory.
Lewis started off slow, falling behind by six points in the opening set before tying it at 16. NJIT called for time with the match tied it at 16. From that point forward the Flyers outscored the Highlanders 9-6. Freshman
Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) had kills for points 23, 24 and 25.
“Our freshmen and younger players earned some good playing time tonight,” Friend said. “It should build some confidence for them and the rest of the team.”
Lewis took the second set with a 5-0 run midway through the stanza. A convincing 11-1 run in the final frame helped Lewis finish NJIT in three sets.
Senior
Aaron Flick (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) hit .700 (8-1-10). Freshman
Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) also had eight kills.
“Eric did some nice things and so did Aaron showing some leadership on the court,” Friend said.
Petty finished with 11 digs and six kills. Sophomore
Roberto Torres-Davis (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Benito) (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Benito) totaled 15 digs.
“Roberto and Greg did a nice job defensively tonight taking care of they needed to,” Friend said.
Lewis played 13 players. Each one recorded a kill or a dig. The Flyers out-hit NJIT .241 to .101.
NJIT falls to 5-6. Lewis improves to 9-3. The Flyers are George Mason on Saturday.
