FORT WAYNE, Ind. – No. 6 Lewis men's volleyball saw their five match win streak come to a halt Friday (Feb. 3) evening 3-2 (15-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22 15-11) at IPFW. The contest was the first Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association contest for both clubs.
Lewis leaned on junior outside hitter
Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and junior opposite hitter
Ian Karbiener (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) all match. Petty finished with 22 kills while Karbiener added 20, two short of his career-high. While Petty hit an impressive .341, Karbiener was even more efficient .545. Karbiener didn't record an attack error until the fourth set. He also added three aces and eight digs.
IPFW won the fifth set by grabbing a 6-3 lead with three straight points. Lewis cut the advantage to 12-10 later in the frame, but would ultimately drop the fifth set 15-11.
“There are no easy conference wins in the MIVA, especially on the road,” Lewis head coach
Dan Friend said. “IPFW played a good match. They had a nice crowd and it was tough environment.”
Lewis held advantages in hitting percentage (.366 to .355) and blocks (11 to 6). The only major difference was digs. The Mastodons recorded 39 digs to Lewis' 30. JW Kieckhefer had 13 digs for IPFW.
“We had some untimely errors and that ended up being the difference,” Friend said. “They out dug us but we held a statistical advantage in most categories. It really came down to committing errors at the wrong time.”
Lewis blitzed the Mastodons in the first set as the Flyers never trailed and won by 10 points. IPFW led the second set 22-18 before Lewis knotted it at 23. However back-to-back IPFW points put the game in the column of the Mastodons. The Flyers grabbed the third game before IPFW won a fourth set which featured 14 ties and three lead changes.
Ivan Matos led IPFW with 21 kills.
Lewis is now 1-2 in five set matches this year. The Flyers lost to Pepperdine in five while defeating Hawaii.
IPFW moves to 6-3 with the win and 1-0 in the MIVA. Lewis falls to 6-3 (0-1 MIVA). The Flyers take a break on Saturday before playing another MIVA road match on Sunday. Start time for the Super Sunday match at Ball State is 1 p.m. ET.
