ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - No. 6 Lewis men's volleyball earned some sweet revenge thanks to a sweep of IPFW 25-17, 25-12, 25-22 on Friday (March 23) evening at Neil Carey Arena. The win avenges Lewis' only Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association loss of the season which came Feb. 3 in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The Flyers were able to jump out to an 18-10 lead during the first set thanks partly to Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North)'s (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) back-to-back aces in an 8-2 run. Following three IPFW kills and a Lewis attack error, the Mastodons cut Lewis' lead 18-14. IPFW would get no closer though as Lewis took the game 25-17. Senior Matt Gallik (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) recorded five kills on six attempts for a .833 hitting percentage in the set.

Refusing to have a repeat of the last time the two teams met when the Flyers blitzed IPFW in the first set only to lose the next; the Flyers came out on fire in the second set on Friday. Lewis went on a dominating 9-0 run to take a 10-1 lead. The Flyers never trailed the Mastodons during the frame. Lewis put up a wall against IPFW's offense as they recorded 5.5 blocks in the game.

The third set was the closest with nine ties and five lead changes. Lewis was able to stretch their lead to 19-15 following a kill by senior Aaron Flick (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward). IPFW asked for time following Flick's kill but it would do little to halt the Flyers' momentum.

“(Tonight) we did a nice job of transferring some stuff that we've worked on during the week,” Lewis head coach Dan Friend said. “From the middles getting going to doing a better job from the serving line.”

Defensively, Lewis dominated the court as they out blocked IPFW 11-4 and recorded 27 digs to IPFW's 18. Offensively, senior Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove North, Ill./Downers Grove North) led the Flyers with 10 kills and six digs while hitting .467. Junior Ian Karbiener (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) and Flick each recorded eight kills apiece. Flick finished with an 8-1-10 hitting line for a .700 percentage.

Sophomore setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) dished out 31 assists. He ran a Lewis offense that outhit IPFW .384 to .155. Boldog also picked up seven digs and four blocks.

“It was a great team effort,” Friend said. “Our middles both hit over .500, our outsides did some really nice things, our serve-receive line did a great job."

Lewis had four aces and just eight errors while IPFW didn't record a single ace.

IPFW falls to 10-11 (2-5 MIVA). The Flyers are now 19-4 (5-1 MIVA) and 11-0 at home.

Next up for the Flyers is another MIVA match as they head to rival Loyola on Tuesday (March 27). First serve is set for 7 p.m.
