OWENSBORO, Ky. – Lewis scored in 11 of the 13 innings they batted, and received a pair of complete game performances on the mound to sweep a Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday (April 15) afternoon 7-4 and 15-5 (7 innings). Lewis was the home team in both contests as they were originally home games for the Flyers until the threat of rain moved the contests to Kentucky.

The Flyers fell behind 4-1 after three innings in game one. Lewis tied the game thanks to three runs in the fourth. The big hit in the fourth was a double by senior Mike Bolling (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep) (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep/Triton) with the bases loaded. It scored a pair of runs. A passed ball scored junior Ian O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) for Lewis' fourth run.

Lewis took the lead in the fifth with a lone run. Bolling earned the RBI thanks to a bases loaded walk. Lewis added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.

“Game one we weren't getting the clutch hits, but Bolling had a key hit and then later we earned some breathing room with two runs in the sixth,” Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said.

All of this went on while Lewis starter sophomore Tom Helwich (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) was settling in to the game. The Panthers recorded just two hits after the third inning. Those hits, both singles, came with two outs in the seventh. Helwich had a stretch in which he retired nine consecutive Kentucky Wesleyan batters.

“Tommy looked like Tommy today,” McDonough said. “It was a tough day to pitch with the wind blowing out. He was able to work through some early errors behind him and threw the ball really well in the middle innings.”

Helwich picked up the win to move his perfect record to 4-0. Helwich finished with a complete game seven inning outing. He allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits, no walks and five strikeouts. Tyler Emberton took the loss for Kentucky Wesleyan. He is now 2-2.

Bolling finished game one with three RBI. Junior Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton/Triton) added two RBI.

Game two was an offensive explosion for the Flyers. Lewis scored in every inning and hit four home runs. Sophomore Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) hit a two-run shot in the first to tie the game. Junior Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) led off the second with a solo home run. Sophomore Kyle Huber (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) hammered a two-run home run in the fifth. Senior Andrew Brauer (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini) (Bollingbrook, Ill./Montini/College of DuPage) slammed a three-run home run in the sixth.

“One through nine today everybody had great approaches at the plate,” McDonough said. “Days like this are fun days to hit and the guys took advantage.“

Brauer finished game two with four RBI. Huber knocked in three runs. Every Flyer scored in the contest.
The game was halted after seven innings when Lewis scored their 15th run of the game in the seventh to go up by 10 runs.

Kentucky Wesleyan starter Tyler Edge took the loss for the Panthers. He is now 3-3.

Schroeder started for the Flyers and went the entire seven innings. His record is now 4-1. He allowed five runs (three earned) on 10 hits and six strikeouts. Like senior Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) on Saturday and Helwich in game one, Schroeder didn't walk a single batter.

“Over the last three games we didn't walk a single batter,” McDonough said. “On day like this that's important to not give any free bases.”

The Panthers fall to 14-20 (8-12 GLVC). Lewis improves to 24-11 (14-8 GLVC). The Flyers host UW-Parkside on Wednesday in a GLVC doubleheader at noon.
